The Rolling Hills City Council this week allocated about $1,000 of its Proposition A transportation funds for bicycle racks at each of the three entry gates to the exclusive community. The council also agreed to give more than $7,000 in Proposition A funds to the city of Rolling Hills Estates, which can exchange them for federal funds to improve Palos Verdes Drive North next year. Palos Verdes Drive North is a principal artery in Rolling Hills Estates and borders Rolling Hills.

Possible acquisition of the 25.9-acre Chandler Trust property by the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will be discussed at a meeting of the nonprofit group at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Peninsula Center Library in Rolling Hills Estates. Conservancy president Bill Ailor said that the property, behind Dapplegray School and adjacent to the Chandlers' Palos Verdes Sand & Gravel Co., is zoned for a maximum of five homes. The property is one of the last major parcels of undeveloped land in Rolling Hills Estates.

I am extremely upset that the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District has sued the city of Rolling Hills Estates over the zoning of Dapplegray. Isn't it ironic that the city is being sued for trying to preserve our schools? Our City Council must not let the school district intimidate them into changing the Institutional Zoning. We need to preserve our schools for future generations. And, it is well-documented that past and present school board members secretly and selectively gave waivers of developer fees to their friends and business associates.

Your Gubernatorial Face-Off series (Commentary page) is a great idea. Now if only you could get the candidates to answer the question. I read the "If forced to raise taxes, this is what I would do" column (Oct. 1) twice and still couldn't figure out where they stood on the issue. And they wonder why nobody votes anymore.
