Two men have been arrested in Las Vegas on suspicion of sending death-threat extortion letters to at least 265 Antelope Valley residents, Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives said Monday. The letters, mailed Nov. 1 from the Antelope Valley or Mojave area, demanded that as much as $600,000 be sent to other people, many of whom were prominent citizens and were themselves recipients of similar letters. The suspects were identified as Roman S. Makuch, 27, and Richard M. Faroni, 26.

Two men suspected of sending extortion letters containing death threats to 265 Antelope Valley residents were arrested this weekend in Las Vegas, officials said today. The letters, which were mailed Nov. 1 to prominent residents, including doctors, lawyers, dentists, businessmen and former Lancaster Mayor Lou Bozigian demanded payments from $500 to more than $500,000. Roman S. Makuch, 27, and Richard M. Faroni, 26, were arrested and booked in Las Vegas on suspicion of extortion, officials said.

Two former aerospace technicians were sentenced Friday to four years each in state prison for sending hundreds of threatening letters to prominent Antelope Valley residents. The sentence makes them eligible for parole before summer. Prosecutors urged San Fernando Superior Court Judge Ronald S. Coen to sentence Roman S. Makuch, 28, and Richard M. Faroni, 27, to eight years each--the maximum under their interpretation of the law.

Two Lancaster men arrested on suspicion of sending death threat extortion letters to Antelope Valley residents were civilian volunteers with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff Sherman Block said Wednesday. Their work as volunteer electricians for the department did not give them access to any information they might have applied to the alleged extortion plot, Block said.
