Ron Drake has resigned as Mission Viejo's baseball coach, effective at the end of the season. In 16 years at the school, Drake has compiled a 241-130 record. Mission Viejo had three 20-victory seasons during Drake's tenure and in 1985, the Diablos advanced to a Southern Section championship, where they lost to Diamond Bar in the 2-A final. Although Drake turned in his letter of resignation two weeks ago, he had wanted to wait until the end of the season to tell his players.

He's just a youngster. But with the recession and all, Winston Drake knows the value of squirreling a little away in the bank. Winston should. He is a squirrel. He's one of seven bushy-tailed red tree squirrels who live in luxury in a hillside home in South Pasadena. The animals have their names painted on the mailbox out front. They sleep with electric blankets--heating pads--on their tiny beds. They keep their money in their own savings accounts at a local bank. And why not?

McKinley, Drake zoomed in and snapped a photo of the burst of clouds coming off McKinley caused by high winds. He used a Nikon Coolpix S10.

Re: David Lazarus' consumer column, "Stimulus proposal revives bad idea," Feb. 1: Kudos for the excellent article on the "buy American" provisions in the stimulus bill. As a former chair of the U.S. International Trade Commission, I know well what can happen when protectionists take control of economic policy: Less competition will lead to higher prices and lower quality. Protectionism and Buy America provisions will only exacerbate and prolong the recession. Susan Liebeler Malibu -- Lazarus fell for the usual "economist perspective" on foreign trade.

School: Mission Viejo High Sport: Baseball Position: Catcher Class: Junior Not many baserunners have received passing marks when they've tested Carr's arm from behind the plate. This season, 29 of the 41 who have tried have been sent back to the dugout, disappointed. In the past six games the toll is even more impressive, with Carr throwing out each of the eight who attempted to steal. "There's nobody in the county who throws better than he does," Mission Viejo Coach Ron Drake said.
