Ron Hilton, who guided Saugus High's softball team to more than 350 victories in 19 seasons, has resigned as coach. Hilton, Times Valley coach of the year in 1996 when he led the Centurions to the Division II section championship, will continue to coach the football team. "It's been tremendously rewarding," said Hilton, whose team's won eight league championships. "But I had a lot of talent on my teams and a lot of help. I was just tired and there's other things I should be doing.

Ron Hilton, who has won a Southern Section softball championship at Saugus High, will get a chance to build a similarly successful football program at the school. Hilton, longtime softball coach and football assistant, was named Saugus football coach Friday. He replaces Jack Bowman, who resigned after last season. "I'm pretty excited about it." Hilton said. "I wouldn't coach anywhere else." He has coached at Saugus since coming from Baldwin Park High 20 years ago.

With the amount of softball talent that has come to his school, Saugus High Coach Ron Hilton could probably have gotten by doing very little. In fact, nobody would have complained if Hilton's sole task for each game was getting the equipment into the dugout and taking seat on the bench. "They come to me so talented," Hilton said. "Four or five of them have their own private coaches. And they're paying for it."

Coach Ron Hilton of Saugus has nothing against Quartz Hill, but he was hoping Hart would score a little more against the Rebels on Friday. Hart routed Quartz Hill, 62-18, in the first round of the Division III playoffs, falling one point short of the school's single-game scoring record. "We're kind of hoping they will blow somebody out and get us out of their record book," Hilton said. Hart defeated Saugus, 63-14, last season.

Saugus High freshman football Coach Jim Phillips has resigned after having his players lie down on the field with the Centurions trailing Valencia, 51-6, in a game Thursday. "He takes full responsibility and knows he was wrong," Saugus varsity Coach Ron Hilton said. Phillips, who was recently inducted into the Saugus Hall of Fame for coaches, would have faced suspension from the Southern Section. The Saugus freshman team has one game remaining. Hilton said assistant coaches will run the team.

Senior left-hander Cathy Lewis threw a three-hitter and struck out 13 to lead Saugus High to a 2-0 win over Culver City in a Southern Section 3-A Division second-round playoff game Tuesday at Saugus. Brandy Rico went two for two, singling home Westie Gray in each of the third and fifth innings. Saugus improved to 19-7 and Lewis, who has every decision for the Centurions, improved her season strikeout total to 322. Saugus Coach Ron Hilton said that Lewis had dedicated the game to the late Jack Smock of Bell-Jeff High, one of her former coaches, who died of cancer Saturday.
