The promoter of next week's Mazda Tennis Classic at La Costa filed a restraining order against Jim Pierce to keep him away from his daughter, tennis player Mary Pierce. Raquel Giscafre said the action was taken after a request by Mary Pierce and her mother. Basketball Former Arkansas basketball standout Ron Huery, 26, was arrested on cocaine possession charges after a routine traffic stop, according to Memphis, Tenn.

Wisconsin (4-3) thought it had tied the game with 13 seconds left on a long shot by Tim Locum, but an official ruled Locum's foot was on the three-point line, making the basket worth two points. Sophomore guard Eric Knox banked in a three-point shot with one second left Friday night to give Oregon State an 85-82 victory over New Mexico in an opening-round game of the National Invitation Tournament at Albuquerque, N.M. The Beavers (19-10) snapped a six-game losing streak. New Mexico (25-10) lost an NIT opener for the third time in four years. New Mexico's Kelvin Scarborough hit a driving layup with 12 seconds left to tie the score, 82-82.

Illinois Coach Lou Henson likes what he sees in newcomer Ken Battle. The 6-foot-6 forward, who sat out last season after transferring from Northern Illinois, scored two key second-half baskets to thwart a Kansas comeback and finished with 21 points as Illinois upset the seventh-ranked Jayhawks, 81-75, Sunday to take third place in the Maui Classic tournament at Lahaina, Hawaii.

Guard Rex Chapman led a balanced Kentucky attack with 22 points as the quicker Wildcats overcame a 45-point performance by David Robinson of Navy to post an 80-69 victory over the 18th-ranked Midshipmen Sunday at Lexington, Ky. Robinson's point total equaled his career high and set a Rupp Arena scoring mark, topping the 37 scored by Freeman Williams of Portland State on Dec. 16, 1977. The 7-foot 1-inch senior center hit 17 of 22 shots from the field and also had 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

Practicing on the beach proved to be a good way for the top-ranked Kansas Jayhawks to prepare for Wednesday night's game at Miami. Rick Calloway led seven Kansas players in double figures with 16 points as the unbeaten Jayhawks blitzed Miami, 100-73, for their 17th victory of the season. They had worked out on a court drawn in the sand after arriving Tuesday in Miami.

Billy Owens scored 24 points and sixth-ranked Syracuse clinched its first outright Big East Conference title by downing Villanova, 77-63, Tuesday night at Philadelphia. Syracuse (25-4 overall and 11-4 in the conference) has shared the Big East title on four occasions. The Orangemen pulled away with a 10-1 surge at the end of the half for a 36-22 lead. Owens had 13 points in the first half, making six of seven shots.
