At some point, most African American men experience a painful social initiation. My son Ryan was 13 when his came. At the time, we were living in Oakland. I worked across the bay in downtown San Francisco, and Ryan was planning to take BART into the city to meet me for lunch. It was only his third or fourth time riding the subway alone, and even though he was practically 6 feet, he was known to get distracted, and I was a worrywart. A man who killed himself as he was confronted by detectives investigating the slaying of Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen talked about serving time in prison, expressed fear that police were looking for him and vowed to die rather than return to custody, according to neighbors. Beverly Hills police declined to provide any details Thursday about the case, including what role the man might have played in Chasen's killing and what led detectives to execute a search warrant at the Hollywood apartment building where he was living.

Jillian Michaels, the tyrant trainer with a heart, is leaving "The Biggest Loser," the NBC series in which overweight contestants compete to shed pounds. The 11th season, which starts in January, will be her last, she said. Michaels said via Twitter that she plans to take a year off, do more charity work and "focus on becoming a mommy. " NBC executives declined to comment Friday on the departure. But Michaels said ? also via Twitter ? that a new trainer was on the way. ?

A man described as a suspect in the slaying of veteran Hollywood publicist Ronni Chasen fatally shot himself at a Hollywood apartment house Wednesday evening as Beverly Hills police were serving a search warrant there. The shooting occurred about 6 p.m. at the Harvey Apartments on Santa Monica Boulevard. It was not immediately clear if police suspected the man of shooting Chasen or of being an accomplice, but four law enforcement sources told The Times that detectives considered him a suspect.
