C.C. Sabathia had more on his mind than baseball Monday night. "Right now, I'm pitching with a heavy heart," Sabathia said. The Cleveland Indian left-hander gave up one run in eight innings in a 5-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox, just hours after attending the funeral of a close cousin. Sabathia's cousin, Nathan Berhel, died last week. Sabathia also lost his father in December, and an uncle during spring training.

ATLANTA -- John Smoltz lost a shot at his first no-hitter in the first three innings. Oh sure, the scorebook will show that Washington's Ronnie Belliard broke it up with a clean single leading off the eighth. But Smoltz looked back at those early innings, when he burned 48 pitches and didn't have enough left at the end to finish the Atlanta Braves' 7-1 victory over the Nationals. Former Dodger infielder Alex Cora agreed Tuesday to a $2.7-million, two-year contract with the Cleveland Indians to fill a utility role. "Alex is overqualified to be called a utility player and has the upside to be a starter," Indian General Manager Mark Shapiro said. "He should get a chance to start 50, 60 games." Cora, 29, started 122 games at second base last season, but the Indians already have Ronnie Belliard in that role.
