Oscar-winning screenwriter Jim Rash ("The Descendants") hosts Sundance Channel's series "The Writers' Room," a chatfest with scripters of such hit TV shows as "Game of Thrones," whose staff sits down with Rash on Monday. Rash also plays the energetic Dean Pelton on NBC's "Community," which has been picked up for a fifth season. How did "The Writers' Room" come about? It was a creation with Sundance in partnership with Entertainment Weekly, and they came to me wondering if I'd be interested in hosting a show that was an open panel discussion about the act of writing and particularly the inner workings of a writing staff on popular television shows.

My co-tester went off to college last week, and I'm a little worried about how he'll keep in shape. Ever since I started this fitness gear column for the Los Angeles Times in 2002 - now up to 280 of them - my son, Joey, has helped me test pull-up bars, elliptical machines, pole-driven skateboards, Trikkes, mountain bikes, golf Frisbees, mini-snow sleds, bodysurfing hand-planes, five-toed running shoes and more. At 7, Joey was my stoker on the back of a $600 Raleigh Companion kid-friendly tandem, which I then bought and rode him to school and back on every day until eighth grade, when he told me it wasn't cool anymore.

They gave us a slow-motion chicken dance, Max Greenfield in a fat suit ( numerous times ) and the epic friend/roommate kiss. The “New Girl” writers room has kept busy concocting a steady stream of adorkable and nutty storylines for the Fox comedy in its short run. Now Sundance Channel is giving viewers a peak at how the funny is made, spotlighting the crew in its latest episode of “The Writers' Room.” The Sundance Channel series has...

After he heard the gunshot, Lee Benton sat down, lifted his shirt and saw the hole in his body. The 16-year-old, who had been at a party in Wilmington, was going to spend the night with a friend. Walking home, the two had decided it would be safer if they took an alley rather than Wilmington Boulevard. It was a little past midnight. There was no confrontation, Lee says. All he could remember was hearing a gun and feeling a burning pain in his stomach. His friend, who was hit in the shoulder, was able to call a girlfriend, who met the boys and drove them to the hospital.

Not too long ago, I was walking along the strip in Venice and saw a man holding a cardboard sign. For 10 bucks, the sign said, you could kick the guy in the crotch. I had to ask: "How's business?" "Slow, bro," he said, as if he was trying to unload Popsicles in the dead of winter. Ah, Venice - where just about everything is for sale. Along Ocean Front Walk, you can buy beach stuff, of course - bodyboards decorated with dolphins, sunscreen jacked up to the price of shiraz.

Craftsman Brewing Co has been making craft beer in Los Angeles for longer than just about anyone, and the Craftsman team is known for their creativity and attention to detail. But they also operate largely behind closed doors; the Pasadena brewery is not open to the public, and there is no tasting room where fans can sample Craftsman's brews. Thankfully, the notoriously fastidious founder of Craftsman Brewing Co, Mark Jilg, has developed a partnership with Los Angeles chef and restaurateur Andre Guerrero, and Jilg's beers are spotlighted at Guerrero's restaurant in Highland Park.

The Dole Food Co. agreed Monday to sell all its remaining shares to the company's chairman and chief executive, David H. Murdock, taking the Westlake Village produce giant private in a sweetened deal valued at $1.2 billion. The 90-year-old Los Angeles billionaire will pay $13.50 a share in cash for all the outstanding shares of common stock he doesn't already hold. As of June, he and his family owned nearly 40% of Dole stock. The agreement, months in the making, comes after Murdock made a $12-a-share proposal in June.

The boutique 57-room Redbury Hotel near the iconic Los Angeles intersection of Hollywood and Vine was sold for $34 million to a Maryland real estate investment trust. The five-story hotel was designed by celebrity photographer and music video director Matthew Rolston and nightclub impresario and hotelier Sam Nazarian with an intentionally over-the-top flair intended to appeal to guests in creative industries in Hollywood for extended stays. Rolston made up the hotel's name by crossing "red" for the color of the building with "bury" from Haight-Ashbury in an effort to mix bohemian, 1960s flower power and old Hollywood sensibilities.
