Jacki Blake (2-0) struck out 10, walked 2 and allowed 4 hits to lead Fountain Valley to a 4-2 victory over La Quinta in a nonleague girls' softball game at La Quinta. Fountain Valley (3-0) scored twice in the fifth on a double steal followed by a wild pitch. La Quinta made five errors. St. Lucy 4, Rosary 3--Patti Carr went 1 for 2 with an RBI in the Royalettes' loss at St. Lucy. Suzi Canney (1-3) was the losing pitcher for Rosary (2-3).

Mark Becher scored his fourth goal with 24 seconds remaining in overtime to help host Brea Olinda defeat Western, 14-13, in an Orange League boys' water polo game Tuesday. Western (11-2, 1-1 in league) took a 13-12 lead in overtime on Justin Weinstock's third goal, but Cody Lowe pulled Brea (5-7, 2-0) even, scoring his only goal to set the stage for Becher's game-winner.

The Tustin girls' basketball team moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Sea View League with a 55-45 victory over University Tuesday night at Tustin High School. Shari Needham had 23 points and 15 rebounds, making 13 of 19 free throws for Tustin (15-7, 5-2 in league), which trailed, 27-26, at halftime.

The Fountain Valley High School girls' tennis team defeated Edison, 12-6, Tuesday at Edison to move into a first-place tie with the Chargers in the Sunset League. Renee Urricariet won her singles sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, and Nora Kapche won, 7-5, 7-6, 6-2, for the Barons (7-1 in league), the fifth-ranked team in the Southern Section 4-A division. Earlier in the season, Edison (14-3 overall, 7-1 in league), the fourth-ranked team, defeated the Barons at Fountain Valley.

Olivia Gamboa began her route through downtown Los Angeles in the pre-dawn darkness. After 13 years as a bus driver with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, she could have chosen any shift. She opted to drive at 5 a.m., as most of the city slept, so she could care for her 3-year-old grandson in the afternoons and spare her daughter the cost of day care. At 5:10 a.m. Wednesday, Gamboa was traveling west on 5th Street, her bus still empty, when police say a flatbed tow truck going 60 mph ran a red light at Broadway.
