Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley said Friday that he would "encourage the appropriate legal agencies" to investigate the circumstances surrounding a $3,000 gift given to one of his top aides--who immediately returned the money--by a group with ties to a company that does business with the city. Rose Ochi, head of the mayor's criminal justice planning office, received $3,000 inside a scarf given to her by a Japanese/American friendship foundation, said Bill Chandler, Bradley's press secretary.

Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese customers of the Southern California Gas Co. will be able to use their native languages to speak with service representatives through a toll-free telephone service to be inaugurated early next year. The planned multilanguage service center was among steps to improve the utility's service to Southern California's rapidly growing Asian population announced Wednesday in response to recommendations from an Asian-American community advisory panel.

Mothers and daughters will be honored for community service and women's rights work at a Mother's Day Brunch celebrating more than a decade of service at the Westside Women's Clinic in Santa Monica. The May 11 event will be at the Brentwood home of Pamela and Arthur Leeds. The winners include actress and hunger activist Mary Ann Mobley, women's rights advocate Billie Heller, USC basketball star Cheryl Miller, television series host Yolanda Nava and Los Angeles city official Rose Ochi.

Re "$4.8 Million Sought for Preservation of Internment Sites," Feb. 9: Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Rep. Robert Matsui and Rose Ochi are to be lauded for their support to preserve Manzanar. And the conversion of the old auditorium building into a visitor's center is, indeed, sorely needed for displays, etc. of the camp's four-year existence. However, for many years now, Shi Nomura (of Garden Grove) has tirelessly built and maintained a Manzanar Center at the Eastern California Museum in Independence, which contains an outstanding collection of photos, memorabilia, artifacts, etc. Also available at the museum are fascinating and enlightening videos (from 8-millimeter movies)
