Oh, say -- can they sing? Apparently not. Or at least not the ever-challenging national anthem in high-profile performances. According to a new survey ranking the worst renditions of "The Star-Spangled Banner," Christina Aguilera sits at the top -- or is it on the bottom? -- of that heap. Aguilera's effort, when she botched lyrics at the 2011 Super Bowl, is ranked as the worst version of that song by nearly 37% of respondents in a survey of IHeartRadio listeners. Not far behind Aguilera was Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler's version last year for the AFC Championship Game, during which he failed to hit several high notes and also appeared lyrically challenged.

I think the Barr-babe should be nominated for president of the United States ["It's Not Just Lip Service," March 18]. In particular; I support the Barr bard's recommendation that if there is to be a minimum wage, it is only logical that there should be a maximum wage. To have one without the other is not only illogical, but asymmetrical. How un-L.A. and un-American is that? I am also in agreement with her views on socialization and our existing pimp culture: What is with this me-too culture?

With jobs disappearing, bills piling up and the horizon appearing ever-narrower, the American middle class might be asking: Where is our voice? Where is our champion? Where is our . . . Roseanne? Actually, the original is raring to go. Roseanne Barr is angry. She's outspoken. And she would once again like to unleash her acid, comedic tongue on behalf of everyday Americans. "I think we should say something about class in America," Barr told me this week. "It's the dirty little secret nobody wants to talk about."

Comedy Central's roast of Roseanne Barr was never going to be an exchange of niceties: Much like Roseanne herself, roasts are about extremes and shock value. Wishing otherwise would be about as successful as opening a strip club on the grounds of Downton Abbey. Yet the special, taped Saturday at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, still made waves. Roastmaster general Jeff Ross made a lot of jaws drop with a crack about the mass shooting at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colo., which left 12 dead and 51 injured, and now has suspect James Holmes charged with 142 criminal counts, including 24 first-degree murder charges.

Roseanne Barr won't be trying to get laughs for a change when she sings the national anthem before the second game of next Wednesday's double-header between the Cincinnati Reds and the San Diego Padres. Barr was asked to sing the anthem by Padres managing general partner Tom Werner, who also is co-creator and executive producer of her ABC television series "Roseanne." Barr's appearance is part of the Padres' third annual Working Women's Day promotion at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.

Joan Kroc knows. Being the owner of a major league baseball team is not all champagne, cheers and excitement. It also comes with headaches and heartaches. I hope she warned Tom Werner. I hope she told him owning the Padres was more than sharing the team's experience of winning the National League Championship Series and Tony Gwynn's experiences winning batting titles and Mark Davis' experience winning the Cy Young Award. Downs come with those ups.

Wednesday night viewers can tune into a reality show about an outspoken, controversial, influential mother who lives in one of the country's noncontiguous states, has a complicated relationship with the media and regularly brandishes firearms. Only this time it's not a former vice presidential nominee, it's Roseanne Barr, who returns to television on Lifetime's "Roseanne's Nuts. " But from the opening scene, in which Barr and her partner, Johnny Argent, hunt the wild pigs that plague the comedian's macadamia farm on the Big Island of Hawaii, the show more than occasionally plays like a satire of "Sarah Palin's Alaska.
