In the title role of Pedro Almodovar's 1994 darkly outrageous attack on propriety, Veronic Forque emerges as an adorable innocent. She's sweet, wild and kind, but it's her naivete that protects her like a suit of armor. Had not Almodovar overplayed his hand by stretching out a clever and ironic finish interminably, "Kika" could well have been among his best efforts.

This 1995 film certainly sounds like a Pedro Almodovar movie, yet it marks a decided departure for the prodigious Spanish director. You could even say, to borrow from one of Almodovar's most famous titles, that it's about 'a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown.' This time, however, Almodovar tells his story in a lower key than ever before, with all his usual compassion but without his trademark outrageousness.

In the title role of "Kika," Pedro Almodovar's latest darkly outrageous attack on propriety, Veronica Forque emerges as an adorable innocent, as giddy as Geena Davis in "Thelma & Louise" but as buoyant as a rubber duck in a bathtub. She's sweet, sex-loving and kind, but it's her naivete that protects her like a suit of armor.

The Don Juan myth has been the inspiration for the likes of Mozart and Byron and G.B. Shaw--and Antonio Mercero. A journeyman Spanish director of no particular note, Mercero does not, at least, attempt to inflate his new movie "Don Juan, My Love" (at the Westside Pavilion) with gaseous significance. It's a knockabout farce with a few too many knocks. Pedro Almodovar, alone among Spanish directors, is able to whip up a farcical atmosphere of supreme, and supremely subversive, silliness.

The skill of the juggler often isn't apparent or appreciated until the moment when he can no longer keep the balls in the air. And the main distinction of "Ready to Wear (Pret-a-Porter)" is how accomplished it makes director Robert Altman's previous work appear. Unable even to decide what its title is, "Ready to Wear" is a mass of confusion pretending to be a movie, a mess of characters in search of an author.

Looking like a vampire desperate for a feed, Richard Grant recoils from Kim Basinger as if she were a gilt crucifix. But it's even worse: She's an airhead TV fashion reporter, closing in for her own version of blood-sucking, the sound bite. Decadently resplendent in fire-engine red lipstick, scarlet velvet suit, black velvet cutaway topcoat, heart-shaped blue spectacles, Grant portrays a new romantic fashion designer loosely modeled after the provocative British designer Vivienne Westwood.
