Clive DAVIS notwithstanding, the record business isn't big on second chances. True, discarded executives often find work at another label, and the names of defunct record companies are regularly dusted off and propped up for show. But these recycled stages are usually pale shadows of the glory that came before. That makes the current vitality at London's Rough Trade Records all the more remarkable.

Today's spur-sharp crop of young female country singers owes a lot to Lucinda Williams. Without Williams,  who in the late '80s and early '90s set the template for bourbon-slugging, disenchanted women in what came to be alt-country, there might not be a Kacey Musgraves, Caitlin Rose or Hurray for the Riff Raff as we know them today. As with most great country, the original article has gotten only better with time. On Tuesday night at the Echoplex, Williams continued her drolly titled “World Tour of Los Angeles” (which has included stops at the Troubadour, Glasshouse and other Southland venues)

After nearly six years on the local scene, Warpaint had little to its résumé: one EP, a rotating cast of drummers and a string of dead-end day jobs. Stella Mozgawa, however, wanted in. A session drummer who had toured her native Australia with Devo, there was little doubt Mozgawa had the chops. Yet singer-guitarist Emily Kokal was skeptical, and there were five words she needed to hear first. With its electronic clamor and confrontational attitude, Cabaret Voltaire appears to be a quintessential representative of England's fertile, anything-goes post-punk era. So it's surprising to realize that the group--which started as a trio and is now a two-man operation--actually got its start 11 years ago, during one of rock's most barren periods.

Matthew and Eleanor Friedberger, a.k.a. the Fiery Furnaces, have been making music together nearly four years, but when talking to them, they act more like children than collaborative rock stars. Perhaps that's to be expected from a band made of siblings. When Matthew launches into a nursery rhyme at the beginning of an interview at Silver Lake's super-strength Cuban coffeehouse Cafe Tropical, Eleanor says, "Oh, Jesus," and leaves the table until he's through.

In 1998, Global Witness, a London-based nongovernmental organization that focuses on the links between environmental and human-rights abuses, published a groundbreaking report on "conflict" or "blood diamonds." The report documented how trade in rough diamonds has funded and prolonged conflicts in Angola and Sierra Leone. De Beers and Global Witness define "conflict diamonds" as those that originate from areas in Africa controlled by forces fighting against legitimate governments.
