Bassist Marshall Hawkins has a resume about as tall as his instrument (work with Miles Davis, Roberta Flack, Richie Cole), but some of his most important work in recent years has come as head of the jazz program at Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts. Tuesday night at 8, in honor of Black History Month, Hawkins' group, Seahawk, will perform in KSDS-FM's (88.3) "Jazz Live" concert series at the campus theater, on C Street, between 13th and 15th streets.

In an incident that police believe may have been gang or drug-related, six mourners were shot outside a Long Beach mortuary where services were under way for two victims of an attack last week. After the Wednesday shooting, three families of victims of the first attack asked for police protection as they bury their children. A rosary was canceled Thursday for one victim out of fear of further violence. A funeral for another was abruptly moved to a secret location.
