George Alexander Louis, what happened? Your royal-baby highness' birth was supposed to be one of the TV events of the year. Instead, Americans have mostly yawned at the hyperventilating coverage of baby George, born Monday to Prince William and his wife, the former Kate Middleton. The infant's name -- he'll be officially known as Prince George of Cambridge -- was revealed in news reports early Wednesday. On Tuesday night, ABC's soon-to-be-retiring Barbara Walters hosted a 10 p.m. special about the royal baby that drew dismal ratings.

What a difference a baby makes. Jennifer Love Hewitt appeared Tuesday on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," scaling back her signature va-va voom look to ma-ma-mommy chic. The newly blond "Client List" star welcomed her daughter Autumn in November, just after tying the knot with her costar baby daddy-turned-fiance-turned-husband, Brian Hallisay. The bombshell appeared on "Ellen" sporting a new hairstyle to get her "momjo" back, according to People. But that wasn't the only aspect of character's call-girl look that was significantly altered.

The royal baby made his debut appearance Tuesday, with Will and Kate taking turns posing with their little prince, the future king . It was a sweet and surprisingly down-to-earth moment. But still, even as I found myself unexpectedly cooing at my screen, I couldn't quite quell a bit of disappointment. I had been hoping for a girl, a future queen. When news broke Monday that Kate had given birth to a boy, CNN correspondent Victoria Arbiter couldn't contain her excitement. Finally, after all this waiting, we know that we have a boy. My first thought, I have to say, was, 'This is how brilliant a royal Kate is.' There are women throughout British royal family history who have panicked over not being able to deliver a boy, and here we are. Kate did it - first time.

Kate Middleton and Prince William have their hands full enough with their son Prince George, delaying any plans the royals might have for another royal baby, they revealed Monday during St. Patrick's Day festivities in England. The duke and duchess of Cambridge, 31 and 32, respectively, appeared at their first joint royal engagement of the year at Mons Barracks in Aldershot to visit the 1st Batallion Irish guards during a St. Patrick's Day parade. There, Catherine presented the officers and guardsmen with traditional sprigs of shamrocks.

The royal baby, born Monday to William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, is expected to leave the hospital soon with his parents. Earlier Tuesday, Prince Charles saw his new grandson, the Prince of Cambridge, paying a visit to St. Mary's Hospital in London along with his wife, Camilla. The newborn stands a good chance of reaching the prize that has thus far escaped Charles' grasp -- becoming king of England. UPDATE: The new parents and baby have made their appearance.

As of this writing, there are few duller spots on the Internet than the live cam that Britain's Telegraph newspaper is aiming at the Lindo wing of St. Mary's Hospital in west London, where the duchess of Cambridge is expected to deliver the heir to the British throne ... sometime. Presumably, maybe, sometime soon. The scene: A red-brick hospital building, with an entrance through Georgian-style doors. Every once in a while, a passer-by passes by. The random motor vehicle blurs by. Otherwise ... nothing.

John Oliver wrapped up his summer-long stint as temporary host of “The Daily Show” on Thursday night, a three-month period which, contrary to conventional wisdom, has been remarkably busy on the news front. Oliver made his debut the very day news of the NSA surveillance scandal broke . And since then, neither the substantive news (the Supreme Court, Egypt) nor the sideshows (Carlos Danger, the royal baby) has slowed down the way it's supposed to in the dog days of summer.

It was quite something to see Prince William and his wife, Catherine, trot out their newborn son this week. I mean, they looked to all the world like regular parents, with William buckling the little one and his car seat into the back of the royal Range Rover, Kate beside the baby, and then William driving off.  Just like the rest of us, right? Of course not. But it was charming to see the royal couple acting, if only for the cameras, like Will and Kate, nervous new parents.

Prince William is opening up about fatherhood as he does his royal duties. At an appearance in Anglesey, where he has been stationed as an RAF pilot since 2009, the second in line to the British throne addressed a crowd at the island's annual agricultural show, according to BBC News . He also apologized that his wife, Catherine, and new son couldn't join him at the event. "I have to say that I thought Search and Rescue duties over Snowdonia were physically and mentally demanding, but looking after a 3-week-old baby is up there!"
