Riverside firefighters rescued a man Monday from Mt. Rubidoux who may have been trapped under rocks for days. Ramon Llamas told the Riverside Press-Enterprise that he was hiking with his dog shortly before 8:30 a.m. when the German shepherd-chow mix pulled him over to some rocks off the main trail. There, Llamas said, he saw a man whose foot was trapped. Llamas gave the man some water and flagged down other hikers to call for help, the newspaper reported. Firefighters told the newspaper that the man was alert but seriously dehydrated.

Mission Viejo High School's softball team must feel as if it has a fairy godmother, because just when everything was going wrong, the team was granted its most desperate wish--a berth in the Southern Section 3-A playoffs. Mission Viejo (17-8) has made the most of its at-large berth, upsetting top-seeded La Mirada on the way to today's semifinal against Ramona (22-7) at 3:15 p.m. at Alicia Park in Mission Viejo. But things looked bleak three weeks ago. The Diablos struggled through the last half of South Coast League play and finished fourth at 14-8.

Riverside Rubidoux, the third-ranked Division I boys' cross-country team in the state, will compete at the Division II level in postseason competition next month because an error was discovered in the way the school figured its enrollment for grades 10-12. The error gave Rubidoux a higher California Basic Educational Data (CBED) number than it should have had. The drop in division should make Rubidoux the state Division II title favorite.

A day after Jim and Kay Mason's friends unscrewed the brass knocker from their front door, a Riverside County building inspector stapled a warning to the same spot: "Unsafe." "There was hope here, but Mother Nature is bigger than all of us," said the inspector, Derick London. The raging, rain-swollen Santa Ana River eroded about an acre of the Masons' 10-acre property in Rubidoux this week, largely destroying the 2,100-square-foot, three-bedroom home Jim Mason built 38 years ago.
