Question for wannabe NBA general managers: If you had a chance to add an inefficient scorer who plays passable defense while possessing one of the league's worst contracts, you'd pass, right? Pete D'Alessandro wouldn't. The new Sacramento Kings general manager couldn't resist the allure of Rudy Gay, who scores points galore but needs a lot of shots to do so. His player efficiency rating was 116th in the NBA at the time of the seven-player trade between the Kings and Toronto Raptors, which cost the Kings a lot more than starting point guard Greivis Vasquez and a passel of nobodies.

Memphis 118, at Miami 90: Rudy Gay scored a career-high 41 points, Marc Gasol made all seven of his shots on the way to a 16-point, 15-rebound effort, and the Grizzlies enjoyed a rare road blowout. Gay made 15 of 28 shots in topping his previous career best by five points, and became just the fourth player since January 2007 to score at least 40 against Miami in a regular-season game. Jamal Crawford (40) did it on Dec. 1, 2008, and LeBron James (42) and Ben Gordon (43) each accomplished the feat last March.

Rudy Gay hit a fadeaway jumper over LeBron James at the buzzer, and the Memphis Grizzlies took advantage of Dwyane Wade's absence to beat the visiting Miami Heat, 97-95, on Saturday night and snap a five-game losing streak. James' dunk with 5.5 seconds left, after Eddie House had stolen the ball from Gay, tied the score for the 12th time. Gay came back with the winning 13-foot jumper. Officials reviewed the shot, then ruled it beat the clock. "I don't care if James Naismith was guarding me, which would be scary because he's dead," Gay said.
