The No. 8-ranked San Diego State women's volleyball team turned back seven match points Saturday, but it wasn't enough to overcome No. 4-ranked San Jose State in a nonconference match in Peterson Gym. The Spartans, by hanging on to win in five games, 15-10, 7-15, 10-15, 15-4, 15-12, improved to 11-2. SDSU, which had a seven-match winning streak snapped, fell to 14-3.

Jack Henn, who led San Diego State to the 1973 National Collegiate Athletic Assn. men's volleyball championship, has been named men's coach again in a reorganization of the volleyball program. Rudy Suwara, who was the school's director of volleyball last season and oversaw the men's and women's programs, said Tuesday he will remain as women's coach, a position he has held since he came to SDSU in 1976. He also coached the men from 1977-80 and last season.

Coach Rudy Suwara expects that this will be a successful season for his San Diego State women's volleyball team because it is supposed to be very strong up the middle. The Aztecs are led by middle blockers Kris Morton, a first-team All-American last year, and Angelica Jackson. What Suwara doesn't expect to happen very often is what happened Friday night when the No. 9-ranked Aztecs met the No. 5 UCLA Bruins in the season opener for both teams at Peterson Gym.

Stan Thomas, a Chicago Bears rookie tackle, was in good condition Monday and could be released from Scripps Memorial Hospital today after sustaining a head wound Sunday when someone fired several shots at his car. "He's doing really well," said Michael Merkow, Thomas' agent, who added the player should be recovered in six weeks and ready to play next season.

San Diego State could not make it two victories in a row over 14th-ranked Oregon Ducks, who defeated the Aztecs, 15-13, 15-12, 15-7, in the championship match of the Cal State Fullerton Tournament. Unranked SDSU had defeated Oregon in pool play and sent the Ducks into the losers' bracket. "I think we got tired, and they were playing very good defense," Aztec Coach Rudy Suwara said.

The UC San Diego and San Diego State women's volleyball teams came to the All-County Tournament Wednesday looking for different things--and found them. The Aztecs, ranked 14th in NCAA Division I, emphasized the difference between top Division I and Division III teams, routing UCSD, the two-time defending Division III champion, 15-1, 15-5, 15-5, in a 58-minute final at SDSU's Peterson Gym.

It turns out those conniving Aztecs are actually planning to use USC as a catapult toward national prominence twice this week. Lurking in the shadows of the football team's much-ballyhooed date with the Trojans on Saturday is tonight's duel between the two schools in women's volleyball (7:30, Peterson Gym). USC is ranked 10th. San Diego State is an afterthought to the top 25.
