Marion Merrell to Buy Generic Drug Group: Prescription drugs maker Marion Merrell Dow Inc. said it agreed to acquire the generic drug business of Rugby-Darby Group Cos. for an undisclosed price. Fred Lyons, chief executive at Marion Merrell, announced the acquisition during the company's annual meeting. "We are taking a strategic step to further position Marion Merrell Dow for the future," Lyons said.

Marion Merrell Dow Inc. Acquires Generic Drug Company: St. Louis-based MMD said it wrapped up the $275-million acquisition of Rugby-Darby Group Cos., the nation's largest generic drug company, in an effort to obtain a bigger share of the managed care market. Plans to acquire Rugby-Darby were announced in May at MMD's annual meeting. The generic business will be known as the Rugby Group Inc. and will conduct business as Rugby Laboratories.

Maxicare Health Plans' doctors are urged to prescribe generic drugs when possible. The result: About 40% of all prescriptions are now filled by generics--a $5-million savings last year in the HMO's drug purchasing budget. San Diego allergist Dr. Eli Meltzer used to prescribe a brand-name drug called Theodor only for his asthma patients. But recently, he has been comfortable recommending a generic version of the medication for unclogging bronchial tubes. His patients save $12 a prescription.
