Shareholders in Rugged Digital will receive a total of 1.67 million shares in Datametrics, in exchange for their shares in Rugged Digital, said Datametrics' president, Sidney Wing. Datametrics Corp., a Chatsworth-based producer of computer printers and other communications products, reported a sharp drop in earnings for its fiscal fourth quarter compared with a year earlier. For the three months that ended Oct. 31, the company earned $44,000, down 91% from a net income of $475,000 in the same period a year earlier. Quarterly revenue, however, was up 28% to $7.78 million, from $6.1 million, mainly because of the company's acquisition of Rugged Digital Systems Inc.

Datametrics Corp., a Chatsworth manufacturer of printers and other computer equipment for the military, said its profit dropped 29% for its fiscal second quarter that ended May 2. Net income dropped to $187,000 from $265,000 in the same quarter a year earlier. Sales for its fiscal second quarter rose slightly, to $5.4 million from $5.3 million a year earlier. For the six months ended May 2, the company's profit dropped 11%, to $443,000 from $495,000 from a year earlier.

Much has changed at Datametrics Corp. since the ailing defense contractor began plotting its entry into civilian markets. Even the office layout has been shifted. Now managers working on new commercial projects are in a separate building from their defense counterparts. For three decades, Datametrics made its name making $60,000 printers that could churn out flawless color prints of battle maps on tanks and battleships.
