Russ Gan was once told he was too slow to have a future in volleyball, that there was no way he would follow his older brothers and sister through Newport Harbor High's program. A gym teacher at Ensign Junior High broke the news to Gan. He was just too slow, physically, to keep up with the sport's pinball-machine pace. Fortunately for Gan, he didn't listen. "He pulled me aside and told me he had another setter, one who was quicker," Gan said. "He told me I might get cut.

Newport Harbor's volleyball team doesn't want to waste any time in its pursuit of the Sea View League championship this season. The Sailors needed just over an hour to sweep Woodbridge, considered its toughest league opponent, Friday night at the Newport Harbor gym. Newport Harbor's 15-6, 15-9, 15-10 victory was its second consecutive sweep, after a victory over Corona del Mar in the league opener Tuesday night. "This was a good match for us," Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn said.

Newport Harbor's volleyball team endured a three-hour, five-minute match Friday night and outlasted Capistrano Valley. Justin McIntee had 33 kills and Fran Griffo added 25 as the top-seeded Sailors defeated the unseeded Cougars, 9-15, 15-11, 14-16, 15-13, 15-5, in a Southern Section 4-A quarterfinal match at Newport Harbor. The Sailors (17-1), the 4-A runner-up last season, advance to the semifinals Wednesday against Santa Barbara, a three-game winner over fourth-seeded Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The Newport Harbor High volleyball team walked a tightrope at times Thursday night, but the Sailors kept their undefeated record intact with a balancing act. Justin McIntee had 25 kills to lead five Newport Harbor players in double figures as the Sailors defeated Mira Costa, 15-4, 17-15, 13-15, 15-5, in a nonleague match at Newport Harbor.

La Habra's Zrinka Kristich and Newport Harbor's Russ Gan will be among the players competing in the Orange County boys' and girls' volleyball all-star matches tonight at Golden West College. Kristich, who led La Habra to the State Division II title last fall, will lead the North team against the South, which features Newport Harbor's Maureen McLaren and Tara Kroesch.

Newport Harbor's volleyball team outplayed all the preseason hype as well as the eight-team field at the Orange County Championships Saturday at Newport Harbor. The Sailors, top-ranked in the Southern Section 4-A preseason coaches' poll, rolled to a 15-4, 15-7 victory over fourth-ranked Edison in the Division I championship match. "This was a good tournament," Newport Harbor Coach Dan Glenn said. "We didn't have an easy match all day."

Maureen McLaren had the lightning bolt kills and big blocks. Russ Gan had the light touch on his sets. And Newport Harbor made it a clean sweep of the most valuable player awards Friday night at the Orange County high school all-star volleyball matches. Gan had 52 assists to lead the North boys to a 15-17, 16-14, 15-10 victory over the South at Golden West College. McLaren added seven kills and three blocks as the South girls defeated the North, 15-9, 17-15, 16-18. "Do you know what this means?"

Beau Sheward traces the Newport Harbor High School volleyball team's drive to the Southern Section 4-A finals to its worst practice of the season in March. "We were shanking everything," Sheward said. "Nothing went right." Coach Dan Glenn stopped practice. "He kicked the whole team out," Sheward said. "He told us we didn't deserve to be in the gym and to get out." Said Glenn, "You hope you don't have to resort to doing that. But sometimes, you have no choice." Glenn made his point.
