Anthony Blackmon of Cal State Dominguez Hills was named most valuable player in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. by a vote of the conference's basketball coaches. Blackmon, a 6-foot-7 center, was the conference's leading scorer, averaging 19.3 points. He was also the conference's top rebounder, averaging 9.9 rebounds. John Masi, who guided UC Riverside to the conference title, was named the coach of the year. Russ Ortega of Chapman College was named to the first team.

Chapman College has signed five basketball players to letters of intent, Coach Kevin Wilson announced Wednesday. The Panthers signed guard Dean Balcao of San Joaquin Delta Community College and forward Russ Ortega of Cosumnes River Community College. Forward Cameron Skaugraud of Juneau (Alaska) Douglas High School, forward Brian Richetto of Stow (Ohio) High School and guard Tim Eggers of Miramonte High School in Orinda also signed with Chapman.

Sophomore forward Dave Roth had 21 points and 8 rebounds, and senior center Kelly Huston added 16 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Gray over the Cardinal, 69-57, Thursday in a Chapman College intrasquad game at the Hutton Sports Center. Andy Stensgard (14 points, 5 rebounds), Russ Ortega (13 points, 8 rebounds) and Wayne Briggs (11 points) helped the Cardinal.

Chapman College will play its annual Cardinal & Gray intrasquad basketball game Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Hutton Sports Center in Orange. Chapman, which finished 15-14 last year, features four returning players: All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. choices Kelly Huston and Dave Roth, along with Wayne Briggs and Matt Honikel.

Senior forward Russ Ortega scored 20 of his game-high 25 points in the first half to lead Chapman to a 91-70 victory over the University of Manitoba in an exhibition basketball game at Chapman Wednesday. Senior Mike Minier added 23 points, and Bryan Richetto scored 13 and had 10 assists. Minier, who played at Mission Viejo High School and Saddleback College, was 3 of 3 on 3-point shots.

Cal Poly Pomona's poor second-half shooting helped Chapman College run away with a 97-71 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory Thursday night Pomona's Poly Pavilion. Chapman forward Russ Ortega led all scorers with 27 points The Broncos made only 12 of 40 shots from the field in the second half. Chapman made 18 of 30 attempts in the same period. Rog Middleton had 16 points and Bryan Richetto 15 for the Panthers.

Russ Ortega scored 22 points and had 7 rebounds and Rog Middleton added 10 points for Chapman (7-7, 0-1), which never led. In women's basketball Chapman 79, Dominguez Hills 52-- Jackie Saunders scored 13 points to lead Chapman in the California College Athletic Assn.

Bryan Richetto scored 17 points Thursday to lead a balanced offense as Chapman College beat UC Davis, 80-69. With 1:14 left in the game and Chapman leading, 69-66, the Panthers made all of eight of their free throws down the stretch. After 10 lead changes in the first half, UC Davis led at halftime, 34-33. The Panthers built an 8-point lead with 9:27 left before the Aggies got to within 62-61 with 6:28 to go. Chapman (7-3) had four players other than Richetto score in double figures.

Fred Jones scored 28 points and Danny Martin added 26 to lead Cal State Bakersfield to an 83-78 men's basketball victory over Chapman College Friday night in Bakersfield. Jones, who was averaging 9.1 points a game, scored 17 in the first half. Martin, who was averaging 9.9 points, made 5 of 10 three-point shots as Bakersfield (10-5, 2-0) won its seventh straight and handed Chapman (10-5, 1-1) its first loss in six games.
