When it first opened, Russell's, a small, romantic cafe on La Cienega Boulevard, had a lot going for it: young, rising-star chef Russell Jackson and a fine, small wine list. Recently it gained one more attraction: a serious beer list. It's true there are lots of places with beer lists longer than a Tarkovsky screenplay, but they are normally the sort of places with burgers and ribs and boisterous bar scenes.

In the winter months, long before the first hint of daylight, Russell Jackson sets out on his not-quite-three-mile run up 3rd Street, along the city's edge. Once he closes in on the ballpark, he takes a deep breath, clambers over a short fence and jumps into the cold, black expanse of San Francisco Bay. He swims a few yards out, and back. He pulls himself out of the shock of the water, to his feet.

I feel the same way about Russell's. The economic climate is such that few new restaurants venture from the predictable path. But behind the stoves at Russell's is a young chef who is daring more--and daring it on a shoestring.

Thomas Barrett III, 75, considered an elder statesman of car collectors who co-founded and built the prestigious Barrett-Jackson Auction Co., died Tuesday of a heart attack at his home in Paradise Valley, Ariz. Barrett and fellow classic car enthusiast Russell Jackson formed the auction in 1971 in Scottsdale, Ariz., earning international fame when Barrett's Mercedes 777 Phaeton sold for $153,000. The event became known as the World's Greatest Classic Car Auction.

Eddie Donovan, the general manager who helped build the New York Knicks' two championship teams in the 1970s, has died. He was 78. Donovan died Saturday from complications of a stroke, his family said. The Knicks held a moment of silence before Sunday's game against the Indiana Pacers. "Eddie was a great basketball guy, had a great feeling for the game," said Laker Coach Phil Jackson, who was drafted by Donovan with the Knicks.

Wide receiver Mark Jackson, who suffered a broken wrist in last week's loss to Seattle, was placed on injured reserve by the Denver Broncos. Jackson's spot in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against New England will be taken by rookie Derek Russell. Jackson will be sidelined for the season. Tendinitis and a bone spur in his right shoulder continue to bother quarterback John Elway, but he will start on Sunday. "It's still real sore, and I don't have the same strength in it," he said.

Art Devlin, 81, a former U.S. Olympic ski jumper and sports broadcaster, died of cancer Thursday night at his home in Lake Placid, N.Y. Devlin qualified for Olympic teams from 1940 to 1960 and competed in two Winter Games. He finished 15th in the 90-meter jump in 1952 in Oslo, Norway, and 21st four years later in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. In 1960, he became a TV sports commentator for CBS. Two years later, Devlin joined ABC-TV, where he was a commentator for 21 years.

A teenage boy was shot dead behind the wheel of his car on a quiet Fountain Valley street, and two other male teens were wounded by gunfire but expected to survive, police said Saturday. In a written statement, Lt. Dann Bean did not identify the victims or discuss details of the police investigation. Neighbors made frantic 911 calls after six shots were fired in what appeared to be a drive-by confrontation just before 10 p.m. Friday in the 8900 block of La Dona Court.

College radio stations have always been known as the last frontier for the new, the untried and the eclectic in broadcasting. Unlike commercial radio stations, which are more inclined to stick with the hits, college radio is open to anything and everything that comes out on vinyl, from the avant-garde jazz of Air and Old and New Dreams to the hard-core punk rock of The Damned, Black Flag, and The Circle Jerks.
