Russell Surber was generally the No. 3 or 4 golfer for the University of Texas men's team as a freshman last season, but that didn't prevent the 1998 graduate of Flintridge Prep from entering the U.S. Amateur championships at Pebble Beach with some high expectations. "I would like to have won it," Surber said. "That was my ultimate goal. I didn't go in there looking to advance to a certain round." Spend a few minutes talking with Russell Surber, and you can't help thinking that there is something special about him. Watch him play golf for a few hours and that suspicion is confirmed. Surber, a junior at Flintridge Prep, has a wholehearted dedication to golf that puts him at the top of the list of the area's top high school golfers. "He is the epitome of the saying practice makes perfect," said Flintridge Prep Coach Bob Loughrie. "He works long and hard where other kids his age get bored."

Russell Surber of Flintridge Prep, the top high school golfer in the region, has committed to Texas, he said on Tuesday. Surber, recently named as a second team All-American by the American Junior Golf Assn., selected Texas over USC and Texas Christian. Ranked 14th in the nation in the Golfweek Boys' Amateur rankings, Surber finished third in the Southern California Golf Assn. High School championships in 1996 and fifth this year. He was the 1997 Times' prep golfer of the year in the region.

Jeff McGraw of Fullerton shot a three-over-par 75 Thursday to finish third at the American Junior Golf Assn. Southwestern Junior Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. McGraw, who shared the second-round lead with Russell Surber of Flintridge and Greg Pittenger of Coto de Caza, finished at three-over 219. Scott Lander of Kingman, Ariz., who shot 69 for a 217 total, beat Surber on first hole of a playoff to win the title. Jin Park of Fullerton and Pittenger tied for fifth at 222.

Russell Surber of Flintridge vaulted into seventh place of the American Junior Golf Assn.'s Lake Tahoe Classic with a three-under par 68 Wednesday at Genoa Lakes Golf Club in Genoa, Nev. Surber was 14th after a first-round 75 Monday. Peter Joe of La Canada also fired a second-round 68 to jump from 41st place to 13th with a two-round total of 147.

A busy week of high school golf begins Monday with the Southern Section individual tournament at Sandpiper Golf Club in Santa Barbara and includes the City Section team and individual championships Monday and Tuesday at Rancho Park golf course in West L.A. Hart and Westlake will each have four representatives in the 140-player field at Sandpiper. Ross Fulgentis of Westlake, Jason Semelsberger of Hart and Flintridge Prep sophomore Russell Surber enter as the area's best shots at a section title.

Former Venice and University High assistant Armando Gomez was named varsity baseball coach at San Fernando. Gomez replaces Dan Heim, who resigned last month after three seasons. Gomez, 28, was City Section 3-A co-player of the year in 1986 after leading Venice to three consecutive 3-A titles. He played one year at San Diego State before transferring to Cal State Dominguez Hills. "I was looking for a chance to start my own program," Gomez said.

You might call them the Valley/Ventura County region's version of a fearsome foursome. Russell Surber, J.T. Kohut, Charlie Smith and Justin Ohye--consistently among the top golfers in the region all season--finished among the top 22 in the Southern Section boys' individual championships Thursday at Friendly Hills Country Club and advanced to the CIF/SCGA tournament June 2 at the SCGA Members' Club in Murrieta.
