Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook is out indefinitely and will undergo surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee, the team announced Friday. Westbrook suffered the injury during the Thunder's 105-102 victory over the Houston Rockets in Game 2 of their playoff series matchup on Wednesday. “Our players' health is our first and foremost concern," Thunder General Manager Sam Presti said in a statement. "The Thunder's medical team and several specialists we consulted with determined that Russell undergo a procedure to address the issue.” Westbrook has not missed a single game since joining the NBA during the 2008-09 season, and for one more day at least has the league's longest active streak of consecutive games played at 394. “We have thoroughly discussed this with Russell,” Presti said.

Kevin Durant is a superstar. We already knew that. But apparently we needed a reminder. With Oklahoma City trailing Memphis by five with about 20 seconds remaining in regulation, a pass from the Thunder's Russell Westbrook toward Durant was deflected by the Grizzlies' Tony Allen. Westbrook was able to recover the ball and sent an off-balance pass to Durant. The Thunder star was immediately pushed out of bounds by Marc Gasol, but not before putting up a prayer of a shot -- which somehow made it through the hoop for a three-pointer.

A scuffle nearly broke out. So you know the play involved Metta World Peace. But this time, World Peace didn't throw any elbows, cause any bodily harm or even earn an ejection. Instead he tried forcing a jump ball with Russell Westbrook when play suddenly went south. It hardly proved to be a game-defining moment for World Peace in the Lakers' 99-96 Game 3 victory Friday over the Oklahoma City Thunder. He overcame a 10-point performance on only three-of-10 shooting by stealing the ball from Kevin Durant and then sinking two free throws to secure a 97-94 lead with 12.6 seconds left.

The Lakers (22-43) visit Oklahoma City (47-17) on Thursday night and a chance to upset twice in a row one of the top teams in the NBA. It took a career-high 42 points from Jodie Meeks, but the Lakers stunned the Thunder, 114-110, on Sunday. Without Jordan Hill (knee), Nick Young (knee), Steve Nash (nerve root irritation) and Kobe Bryant (knee), the Lakers were lucky to get the win Sunday and the Thunder won't take them lightly again. Key matchup Russell Westbrook is one of the league's most dynamic point guards but Meeks did a credible job defending him Sunday.

The Oklahoma City Thunder signed All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook to a multiyear contract extension on Thursday. Westbrook was set to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season, meaning the Thunder would have had to match any offer he received from another team if it wanted to keep him. Instead, it locked him up with a new deal 15 games into this season. Terms were not disclosed, but Yahoo Sports reported the deal was worth $80 million over five years. Oklahoma City has the best record in the Western Conference, with Westbrook averaging 20.5 points, 5.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds.

Oklahoma City guard Russell Westbrook had surgery on his right knee Friday and will be out through the All-Star break. "Russell has been playing pain free, but recently had experienced increased swelling," Thunder General Manager Sam Presti said. "After consultation and consideration by his surgeon in Los Angeles, a plan was established to monitor the swelling that included a series of scheduled MRIs. "On the most recent MRI it was determined by the surgeon that there was an area of concern that had not previously existed, nor was detectable in the previous procedures, and it was necessary to evaluate Russell further.

Looks like he was ready after all, huh? UCLA fans grimaced when freshman Kevin Love entered the NBA draft in the spring of 2008, even though they knew all along he would. They were aghast when sophomore Russell Westbrook, then known as Russell He's Not Ready Westbrook, did it. Now, it's more like the NBA isn't ready for Russell Westbrook. Watching him drive, cock the ball behind his ear and prepare to tomahawk one on the Lakers, it's hard to believe that he didn't dunk until his senior year at Leuzinger High.

If his players thought Mike Brown's previous film sessions felt long, those agonizing moments probably paled in comparison to the review of the Lakers' 119-90 Game 1 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.  The Lakers coach surely had plenty  to discuss. The Thunder nullified the Lakers' inside presence,  scoring 48 points in the paint. The Lakers forced only four turnovers against a team that  averages 11. They  coughed up the ball 15 times and yielded 13 fastbreak points.

The Lakers aren't the only team in the Western Conference with major injury concerns heading into the season. Oklahoma City star guard Russell Westbrook will miss four to six weeks after undergoing surgery Tuesday on the same right knee he injured during last season's playoffs. Westbrook was experiencing swelling in the knee that apparently was caused by a loose stitch left from the procedure he had in April to repair a torn meniscus, Thunder General Manager Sam Presti told reporters.

He's baaaack! "And at guard, 6-3 from UCLA, No. 2, Russell Westbrook !" Chesapeake Energy Arena was rocking last Sunday night when Oklahoma City's second-best player was unexpectedly the last starter introduced, an honor usually reserved for Kevin Durant . That Westbrook was playing at all was an even bigger surprise. The star point guard was expected to be sidelined four to six weeks after knee surgery but in fact missed only four days, returning to lead the Thunder to victory over Phoenix.

The Lakers will probably be mathematically eliminated next week from a playoff spot, four weeks before the regular season ends. That's what happens when you go 10-29 since Dec. 21. But Coach Mike D'Antoni still wants some consistency from them over their final 18 games. They got drilled by the Clippers last week, lost a home game to New Orleans and were no-shows in Denver. Yet they beat Portland and Oklahoma City in the span of seven days. It's fine to be confused.

James Harden is long gone, presumably never to return. Russell Westbrook is probably coming back soon, though the right knee that has required three surgeries since April makes his long-term durability somewhat questionable. That leaves Kevin Durant, which means everything is going to be OK(C) for the Thunder. It almost seems as if the spindly forward is all Oklahoma City needs on many nights. Durant recently scored 30 or more points in 12 consecutive games, a streak that ended only after he sat out the entire fourth quarter of a blowout victory over the Brooklyn Nets.

The oldest player in the NBA isn't worried about staying in front of quicker counterparts or piling up assists or leading his team to the playoffs. Steve Nash just wants his body to cooperate so he can get through a game. It was too much to ask again Tuesday night, the Lakers point guard departing prematurely because of discomfort in his leg and back. He was done at halftime after 17 unremarkable minutes, leading one to wonder just how many are left on the odometer of a 40-year-old who continues to creak his way toward the Hall of Fame.

With All-Star forward Kevin Durant sitting out Friday night against the Boston Celtics, the Oklahoma City Thunder will play a game for the first time since 2008, when the franchise relocated from Seattle, without either Durant or point guard Russell Westbrook in the lineup. Durant, who is leading the NBA in scoring at 31 points a game after a run of nine consecutive games with at least 30 points, injured his right shoulder when he was fouled trying to dunk against San Antonio on Wednesday night in a 111-105 victory that moved the Thunder (33-10)

The NBA's top players can be divided into three categories at next month's All-Star game: The West, the East and the creased. Several stars will be wearing freshly pressed suits as the result of injuries that have seemingly left no roster untouched. Derrick Rose, Brook Lopez and Al Horford have been sidelined for the rest of the season, and Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook and Kobe Bryant all hope to return within the next month. Dr. Riley J. Thunder 114 - Lakers 108 (final) The Lakers chased the Oklahoma City Thunder with a late rally but the Thunder held on to win, 114-108. Kevin Durant led all scorers with 36 points, making 10-19 shots from the field and 14-19 from the line. The real damage was done in the first half as Russell Westbrook dominated the game, finishing with 33 points and eight assists. The Lakers were led by Kobe Bryant's 35 points. Dwight Howard had a double-double with 23 points and 18 rebounds, but the Lakers shot 42.9% from the field and turned the ball over 17 times.

The third quarter's final seconds blinked off the clock as Russell Westbrook dashed up court. Then, the Oklahoma City point guard stopped on the "C" in the red-lettered "STAPLES Center" inscribed on the court, took aim, and fired a long three-pointer. Immediately after his buzzer-beating bull's-eye shot, Westbrook shot the crowd a smile, blew on his smoldering-hot fingers and holstered them. If he had a "C" stitched on his Thunder jersey on Thursday night, it would've been fitting, as the Long Beach native and former UCLA star captained his Western Conference-leading squad to a 102-93 victory over the Lakers.

GOLDEN STATE AT OKLAHOMA CITY: Friday, 6:30 p.m. PST. TV: ESPN. If you can tune in for only a minute of this game, make sure it's the final 60 seconds. Both meetings between these teams have come down to the final play, with the Warriors pulling out a 116-115 victory Nov. 15 on Andre Iguodala's fallaway jumper at the buzzer. Two weeks later it was Oklahoma City's turn to beat the clock, with Russell Westbrook making a corner three-pointer with 0.1 of a second left in overtime to give the Thunder a 113-112 triumph.

They've barely taken part in anything this season, but Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant will come back soon. Maybe by the end of the month. The Lakers are targeting Jan. 28 for Nash's return. They're hopeful Bryant will be back then too. "My understanding is that it's about the same time," Coach Mike D'Antoni said Friday. "Hopefully, both of them are ready. " Bryant and Nash, you might remember, each have played six games. That's all. Their return would come after the Lakers' seven-game trip, their longest of the season, which starts Wednesday in Phoenix.
