Free-agent floodgates opened even more Thursday and NBA executives started making deals, including two by the Clippers. In one dizzying stretch, the Clippers reached agreements with forward Ryan Gomes and guard Randy Foye, helping fill two big needs in a couple of hours. On top of that, they released a positive, forward-looking statement that all the other LeBron James finalists were putting out not long after James selected Miami. (That is, other than fire-breathing Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert)

The Clippers have used the NBA's one-time amnesty provision on small forward Ryan Gomes, said NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter. The team did so just before the league's 8:59 p.m. (PDT) Tuesday deadline. Gomes will make his entire $4-million salary, but it  won't count against the Clippers' salary cap and luxury-tax threshold. That now opens the door for the Clippers to sign free-agent small forward Grant Hill, as the team plans to do with the biannual exception, the NBA executives said.

Ryan Gomes scored 27 points Sunday night, and the Minnesota Timberwolves snapped a 15-game losing streak with a stunning 106-100 road victory over the Denver Nuggets. Corey Brewer and Jonny Flynn each scored 16 points in helping Minnesota rally from 17 points down in the first half and register their first win since a season-opening win against New Jersey. Carmelo Anthony matched a season-high with 19 points in the first quarter and finished with 32 for Denver, which lost to Minnesota for the first time in 11 meetings.

Quietly and reflectively, Eric Bledsoe and Ryan Gomes talked about how their names have been mentioned in Clippers trade rumors. Neither expected to be traded before Thursday's noon PDT deadline, but neither player was positive that he would remain a Clipper. Gomes has stayed abreast of the situation, saying that he has heard about speculation that he and Bledsoe would go to Portland for Jamal Crawford . Gomes said he even heard that the Clippers were trying to get Utah's Raja Bell . "I'm an Internet junkie," Gomes said.

A shortage of small forwards. Oh, that … again. It really never goes away for the Clippers. It was a lingering concern during the exhibition season. In November. And in March. April too? You get the idea. Coach Vinny Del Negro sighed when the subject was broached once again Thursday after practice. The Clippers, who play at the Phoenix Suns on Friday, have seven games remaining, five on the road. One thing Del Negro is considering: shutting small down forward Ryan Gomes for the rest of the season.

Just when a Clippers bench player appears to be gaining traction, gathering the slightest bit of momentum ? guess what happens. An injury. It happened to Brian Cook in the last minute against Detroit on Friday when he suffered a sprained right ankle. It is a high sprain and he will be out for at least a week and then will be reevaluated. Craig Smith was effective off the bench in the Clippers' one-point victory at Chicago on Saturday with 13 points and six rebounds.

Reporting from Oakland -- The Clippers think they have a strong bench, especially with Mo Williams now being a reserve after having been a starter last season. With the shortened, 66-game regular-season schedule because of the lockout, it will be even more important for the Clippers' substitutes to be effective. Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro said he has the ability to go deep into his rotation, maybe even as far as 10 players. "I feel very confident in our bench," Del Negro said.

An hour later, I still wanted to chant it. An hour after Chris Paul stunned his giddy teammates and silenced the raucous Staples Center by literally throwing away a Clippers victory to the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday, I wanted to chant it louder than ever. As I sift through the rubble of the Spurs' 103-100 overtime win, I'm still wondering, why won't more Clippers fans chant it? "M-V-P … M-V-P … M-V-P. " He didn't hear it at the free-throw line, and he won't be feeling it on the streets, but Paul has been the NBA's most valuable player in the first half of the season, and what happened Saturday confirmed that.

Ryan Gomes admits he is in a "slump. " A backup small forward with the Clippers, Gomes said his offense has been subpar and that it should be better. Gomes understood why the Clippers looked elsewhere for a scoring punch off the bench behind starter Caron Butler . He was aware that the Clippers tried to sign free agent J.R. Smith (he signed with New York) and that the team worked out seven players recently. Gomes, who is averaging 2.6 points and shooting 33.7%, said he understands why Clippers fans and the media wonder about his play.

Before the season started, Ryan Gomes knew he wouldn't be starting at small forward for the Clippers and that his playing time would decline when the team signed free-agent forward Caron Butler . Gomes, who was playing only 16.5 minutes per game and averaging 3.2 points and 2.4 rebounds before Monday night's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, said he has to stay patient and be professional. He started 62 games last season for the Clippers — he played in 72 games — and averaged 27.6 minutes, 7.2 points and 3.3 rebounds.

Reporting from Oakland -- The Clippers have read about it in stories, heard about it on television and on the radio and listened to it from family members, friends and fans. Yes, Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro said, his team does practice inbounding the basketball frequently. He said they work on end-of-game situations, last-second plays, two-pointers, tipins, three-pointers, side out of bounds and full-court stuff. It became an issue for the Clippers after Ryan Gomes' inbounds pass to Chris Paul during Saturday's game against the San Antonio Spurs led to a turnover.

With the Clippers these days, the roles are forever changing. For Ryan Gomes, his role has changed from last season, something he knew would happen when the Clippers told him they were looking to upgrade at his small forward position. He was the starter last season, but now he is a reserve behind Caron Butler, whom the Clippers signed in free agency to a three-year, $24-million contract. "My thoughts were that we got a guy who played in the playoffs a lot," Gomes said about Butler after practice Thursday.

When the Clippers signed Ryan Gomes in the off-season, the 28-year-old forward was expected to come off the bench mostly to fill defensive holes and leave the bulk of the scoring to the Clippers' starters. But then Baron Davis, Chris Kaman and other Clippers suffered injuries and now, through 35 games, Gomes has averaged the third-most minutes per game (28.7) on the team behind Eric Gordon and Blake Griffin. Gomes, in his sixth NBA season, also is being encouraged to shoot more often to bolster the Clippers' offense, though he's averaging 7.5 points per game, well below his career average of 11.5 at the start of this season.

The Clippers' season practically started with an MRI exam, so it made complete sense that it would end that way with one game remaining. This time, it turned out to be injury-riddled center Chris Kaman, who is certainly well-acquainted with the MRI machine. Clippers Coach Vinny Del Negro said Monday morning that Kaman was scheduled to have an MRI exam on his sprained right knee either later in the day or perhaps Tuesday. Kaman suffered the injury in the latter stages of Wednesday's loss at Oklahoma City, and did not play in the Clippers' final two road games, at Dallas and Houston, both losses.
