Tim Tebow still has hope that he can play football this season, and it could be with the New England Patriots, even though they cut him this weekend, or perhaps another NFL team, or possibly in the Canadian Football League. The former college star turned NFL bust, at least as a quarterback, can take solace in that Patriots Coach Bill Belichick would not rule out the possibility of a return to New England when he addressed reporters Monday in his first comments since releasing Tebow, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound left-hander who completed 11 of 30 passes for 145 yards in three exhibition games, with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady limped off the practice field Wednesday after appearing to hurt the same knee that caused him to miss almost all of the 2008 season. During a practice against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Foxborough, Mass., Brady was throwing a pass when he fell to the ground without being hit. He grabbed his left leg. He left the field gingerly but on his own, then reportedly made a brief return to the field before leaving again to meet with the training staff.

The Times' Chris Dufresne unveils his preseason college football top 25, one day (and team) at a time. No. 17 Arkansas Every year it seems the pundits anoint a sleeper from the West Wing of the Southeastern Conference to challenge kingpins Alabama/Louisiana State/ Auburn and possibly make an end-around run to the national title. Ole Miss, led by the old Arkansas coach, Houston Nutt, started the season No. 8 in the Associated Press poll and No. 10 in the USA Today coaches' poll.

It's a good thing Tim Tebow didn't agree to a season in the arena leagues. Tebow will sign with the New England Patriots just in time for Tuesday's mandatory minicamp, ESPN is reporting. He will reunite with Patriots offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Josh McDaniels, who was the coach of the Denver Broncos when the team traded up to select Tebow with the 25th pick in the 2010 NFL draft. When the New York Jets traded a fourth- and sixth-round pick for Tebow last season, it created a quarterback controversy that loomed over the team throughout the season as starting quarterback Mark Sanchez struggled.

Rich in parable, rife with prophesy, it is a transaction of biblical proportions. In hopes of saving his football soul, the NFL's most famously devout player is going to the dark side. Tim Tebow is joining hands with Bill Belichick. Kum-ba- yow! A celebrated quarterback mostly known for public prayers and lousy passes is joining a celebrated New England Patriots team not known for much of either. In a desperate effort to prolong a seemingly doomed career, one of the sporting world's warmest stars has signed a contract to work in one of its chilliest cultures.

Tim Tebow is officially a member of the New England Patriots. The Patriots announced Tuesday morning that the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback out of Florida has signed with the team, although contract terms were not disclosed. ESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted that it's a two-year contract with no guaranteed money. In just three NFL seasons, Tebow has become one of the most popular yet polarizing players in league history. His quarterbacking skills at the pro level have always been debatable, yet he had a run of success in his two years with the Denver Broncos that included a playoff victory.

Writers from around the Tribune Co. discuss who is the best choice to replace Bobby Petrino, who was fired as the Arkansas Razorbacks football coach Tuesday. Feel free to join the conversation by leaving a comment of your own. Chris Dufresne, Los Angeles Times First, Jeff Long deserves athletic director of the year consideration for firing Bobby Petrino instead of going the Ohio State route and saying something like "I hope he doesn't fire me. " Petrino is a good coach who always seemed the kind of crass guy who might crash his motorcycle with a mistress on board.

Ryan Mallett has left the arena … how about a round of applause? The guy's arm was so strong the team once voted him "most likely to throw a watermelon through a keyhole. " He's probably going to make a terrific replacement someday in New England for Tom Brady. He has all the professional tools and the box they came in, yet he wasn't exactly Joe Montana in the clutch. Mallett was "almost' legendary. He could have won the Heisman Trophy — but didn't. In stinging defeats against Alabama and Ohio State, Mallett lacked the magic touch that made Auburn quarterback Cam Newton famous.

A shakeup in the national rankings is due Sunday, when a new batch of polls and the first Bowl Championship Series standings of the season comes out. A pre-shock took place Saturday right on the Heisman Trophy fault line. Taylor Martinez , Denard Robinson , Ryan Mallett and Terrelle Pryor were among the leaders who tumbled. Martinez, Robinson and Mallett were all watching from their sidelines as their teams lost. Nebraska's Martinez was so ineffective he was benched in favor of backup Zac Lee as the Huskers were upset by Texas.

1: Why is it Oregon is the only major college state brave (or dumb) enough to take on games at Boise State? A year after Eugene's Ducks risked their reputations on the blue turf, the Beavers of Corvallis take their Rodgers' brothers act into Saturday night prime time against the nation's No. 3 team. 2: Last year, Mississippi had a top quarterback, Jevan Snead, and Alabama on the home schedule but couldn't overcome the Crimson Tide. This week, Arkansas and Ryan Mallett welcome Alabama to Fayetteville in a key SEC West matchup with national title implications.
