Advice from former NFL quarterback Erik Kramer prompted Ryan McCann to transfer from UCLA to Tennessee Chattanooga, a Division I-AA team that was 3-8 last season. "He said I can't wait around any longer, that I have to play," McCann said. The redshirt junior took private lessons from Kramer over the winter and believes he can play professionally. After talking to UCLA coaches, McCann did not believe he would get a chance to start next season.

Quarterback Ryan McCann, who led UCLA to victories over Alabama and Michigan as a sophomore but was third string last season, said Wednesday night he will transfer today to a Division I-AA school. McCann, a 6-foot-3 junior from Agoura High, must transfer to a program below the Division I-A level to be eligible next fall. He has narrowed his choice to two schools but declined to identify them. McCann's departure leaves UCLA with Cory Paus as the only experienced quarterback.

A father's words angered him, then pushed him, through a tunnel of despair into an afternoon of brilliance. Walking out of an empty Rose Bowl late Saturday afternoon, the UCLA quarterback finally found words of his own. Ryan McCann hugged John McCann. "You told me," Ryan said. The father said nothing. He had already said enough.

Coach Bob Toledo promoted Ryan McCann to backup quarterback Monday and, unexpectedly, raised the possibility of opening up competition for the starting job anew in spring practice. There is no indication the Bruins will remove Cory Paus as the starter for the Nov. 13 game against Washington at the Rose Bowl, after a bye this week.

UCLA's quarterback situation did not clear up Wednesday, injuries still affecting Cory Paus and backup Scott McEwan while third-stringer Ryan McCann spent significant time with the first-team offense. For now, the panic button is safely under lock and key: Coach Bob Toledo said time was an ally heading into Saturday's game at Washington State. "The thing I've found out over the years is you've got time," he said. "Guys heal every day. They get better as the weeks go on and the days go on.

Moorpark High Coach Ron Wilford had every reason to be nervous this week, and not just because his team's game against Nordhoff on Friday was for the Frontier League championship. The Musketeers lost several pieces of equipment when a suspected arson fire Nov. 4 damaged a football storage shed. But Moorpark administrators replaced most of the lost equipment this week, including blocking-sled bags and stand-up tackling dummies.

Ryan McCann is back in the quarterback queue, unsure if he will ever again get to the front of the line. The role is familiar, if not particularly comfortable. McCann, a junior, began each of the last two seasons as a reserve only to find himself under center in key games. As a freshman, he led UCLA to a late-season victory against Washington after taking over for Cory Paus, who broke his collarbone.

Coach Bob Toledo turned back to Ryan McCann on Monday, naming him UCLA's quarterback Saturday against Michigan. At least at the start. "If he can do it, he can continue to play quarterback," Toledo said. "And if he doesn't do it, I may even yank him again." Votes of confidence from the coaching staff would have to suffice for a commitment to McCann, who got benched at halftime Saturday against Fresno State but got the nod over Scott McEwan on Monday because McEwan is less ready.

OK, here's the rundown on UCLA's ever-changing starting quarterback position: Ryan McCann is out, Scott McEwan is in. Or is McCann in and McEwan out? If you're confused, just think what the coaching staff is going through. After UCLA barely held on for a 24-21 victory over Fresno State Saturday night at the Rose Bowl, Coach Bob Toledo was appropriately blunt about where things stand. "We need to get better performances from our quarterback position for us to be successful," he said.

Coach Bob Toledo raised the possibility Monday that Ryan McCann's battlefield promotion to starting quarterback for UCLA could become permanent if the Bruins continue to perform well, even though Cory Paus did nothing to lose the job beyond getting hurt. "I would think that if we continue to win and we're doing well, I may not make a change," Toledo said. "If [McCann] struggles and we're struggling, then it would be easier obviously.

It's something new to Ryan McCann. He has always been the best quarterback on his team, and now he finds Cory Paus might be better, at least in the minds of those who dole out playing time at UCLA. "We look at everything," Bruin Coach Bob Toledo said Monday. "We're not just looking at throwing the ball. We're looking at calling plays, getting us out of plays [changing them at the line of scrimmage in response to defense]. And we're looking at not getting us beat . . .
