NEW YORK - Say this for the 2013 quarterback class: They've learned how to slide. Four of them were selected in the fourth round Saturday, two of whom - USC's Matt Barkley and Syracuse's Ryan Nassib - were widely believed to be first-round candidates. "I'm a little bit surprised at how long I lasted," said Nassib, who in some mock drafts went eighth to Buffalo, but who actually went 110th to the New York Giants. "Everyone was just hyping me up, I guess. " Philadelphia traded up to make Barkley the first pick of the day, and Nassib was grabbed 12 spots later.

Matt Barkley is looking ahead to this week's NFL draft, but the former USC quarterback also looked back during an interview with Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports. Barkley told Silver that he could have "done a few things differently" during his final season at USC. "I could've had a bigger voice, given more input and taken it to the next level - pretty much as the owner of the company might … not just letting things happen," Barkley said. "You put faith in your coaches, but when you see trends, things not happening the right way, and when the team rests on your shoulders, it's almost like you have to step up. You can't just let these things go by and watch them disintegrate in front of you. You've got to put the glue in somewhere.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Robert Woods was listening. For much of the last year, USC Coach Lane Kiffin has said that sophomore Marqise Lee had a chance to be the best receiver in school history. After last week's opener against Hawaii, Kiffin said Lee will be the best. "I hear it," Woods said. In case anyone needed to be reminded that USC has another receiver worthy of top billing, Woods made himself heard Saturday against Syracuse. On a day when a tornado touched down in New York and the start of the second half was delayed because of possible approaching lightning, Woods bolted back into the national spotlight.

The draft will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday in New York. Times NFL writer Sam Farmer examines team needs by division. Today, the East divisions: AFC East The Buffalo Bills are once again in search of a quarterback, and might reach for one with the eighth overall pick. An intriguing fit is Ryan Nassib, who played for new Bills Coach Doug Marrone and (new Bills offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett) at Syracuse. Even though the franchise broke the bank on pass rushers last off-season, the Bills could use more help in that department.

Scouting expert Greg Cosell, an analyst for NFL Films, shared some of his observations Friday on quarterbacks who will be under the microscope heading into April's draft: Geno Smith, West Virginia: "He's got an NFL arm and can make all the throws. He's got significant footwork issues that make him late with a lot of throws. Is it theoretically coachable? Absolutely. But he's been doing it for a long time, so it's a question. " ... Plus when he scans the field, "he's bouncing, then he sees where he wants to throw it, then it takes him an extra beat to get his feet ready to throw it. You can get away with that in college, but you won't get away with that in the NFL. That needs to be cleaned up. It's like a guy having a hitch as a hitter in baseball.

So much for that second-half scoring drought. Going into Saturday's game against Syracuse, USC had scored only one touchdown after halftime in its first two games. Though pleased the Trojans were unbeaten, quarterback Matt Barkley admitted frustration, saying last week, "We have to keep raising that bar because we can do so much more. " Barkley did plenty against the Orange, throwing three of his five touchdown passes in the second half as USC routed Syracuse, 38-17, before an announced 65,873 at the Coliseum.
