Before this season began, Cal State Fullerton's Ryan Owens asked Coach George Horton if he could change his uniform number from 10 to 4. Just another player looking for better baseball karma? Not Owens. "I did it for my grandfather because, really, I'm living his dream," Owens said. Owens' grandfather, Elmer Owens, had played baseball at Compton High but was taken away from the game by more than three years in the Navy during World War II and then the need to support a young family.

Ryan Owens singled, doubled twice, homered, and knocked in seven runs as Cal State Fullerton beat Nevada-Las Vegas, 16-6, in a nonconference game Saturday in Las Vegas. The Titans (7-3) had 19 hits, including five doubles and two homers. The Titans also stranded 15 runners. Titan center fielder Reed Johnson singled twice, doubled, and homered for the Titans. Johnson also scored four times and had three RBIs.

Ryan Owens, the shortstop on Sonora's Southern Section Division II baseball championship team, said Monday he has committed to Cal State Fullerton, and will sign Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period. Owens, who hit .400 as a junior for a team that was 24-4-2, recently was rated as one of the nation's top 100 high school prospects by Baseball America.

Owens has been a key player for the Titans the last two seasons, but the infielder hasn't quite lived up to others' high expectations. This summer, however, the diamond is showing a lot more sparkle. Owens earned a spot on the 26-man Team USA roster by batting .600 in the team's first nine games.

Cal State Fullerton outfielder Spencer Oborn was named first-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn. Thursday. Other Southern California players named to the first team were USC pitcher Barry Zito, USC catcher Eric Munson and Long Beach State pitcher Mike Gallo. Fullerton third baseman Ryan Owens was named to the second team and second baseman David Bacani was picked for the third team.

Ten players had extra-base hits as Cal State Fullerton completed a three-game sweep of Arizona with a 20-9 victory Saturday in Tucson. The Titans, ranked 12th in the nation in one poll, scored 12 runs in the last three innings. Mike Lamb was four for five with a double and three runs scored for the Titans (5-2). Fullerton's Ryan Owens had a double, two singles and two runs batted in. Teammate Craig Petterson hit his first home run of the season and had three RBIs.

Aaron Rowand had two home runs and six runs batted in to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 17-9 victory over Loyola Marymount Wednesday night at Titan Field. Despite the Titans opening with a seven-run first inning, Loyola came back to take a 9-7 lead in the top of the fourth. But the Titans rallied with two in the fourth and three in the fifth to take the lead for good. Cal State Fullerton put the game away in the seventh inning, scoring five runs.
