The 59th Annual Emmy Awards will have a touch of the biggest show on television after all -- "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest was tapped Monday to front this year's ceremonies. "I've covered the Emmys before from many different angles, and I'm thrilled, honored and excited to be hosting it this year," Seacrest said in a brief phone interview Monday afternoon. "With my schedule, there's always that final check to make sure I could do it all, but with the Emmys you make the time."

With the premiere of the third season of "American Idol" tonight, host Ryan Seacrest caps a 10-day span he hopes will mark the beginning of his evolution from affable, well-coiffed confection to entertainment mogul. The prospect might be hard to reconcile for anyone dismissing the former KYSR-FM (98.7) DJ as a pop-culture firefly -- an attractive amusement who keeps appearing here, there and seemingly everywhere.

Mazel tov, England. As your former suburb, we just want you to know how enchanted we are with what's happening over there right now between William and Catherine (a.k.a. Kate). We hear there'll be some sort of ceremony soon. The world will pause. Hearts will flutter. I'll eat a turtle dove -- extra fries. For a moment, the British Empire will shine once more. And, through it all, America will have wedding envy. What's wedding envy? That's when someone has a bigger wedding than yours.

For folks who haven't overdosed on awards shows or Ryan Seacrest, Fox TV has announced plans for the "American Top 40 Awards," to honor the top acts from Seacrest's weekly radio show. The telecast is expected to air in 2005.

Two quick questions for Ryan Seacrest Should there be an Emmy for reality show host? I think the world can go on without it. I'm just happy they've acknowledged the unscripted shows at all. But it's only fair that they have because these competitions have changed the landscape of television. -- Who is your favorite Emmys host? They've had legends before but I'm a big Ellen DeGeneres fan. She has the perfect sensibility. Very funny, very comfortable and likable.

IT isn't very smart of Deborah Netburn to compare Nicolas Cage to Ryan Seacrest in regard to being busy in 2007 ["Smart List," April 22]. Seacrest works daily on radio and TV. Her examples of Cage's "hard work" for this year weren't even done this year. Those movies were filmed in 2005 and 2006. If you are going to use the word Smart in your title, then strive to be that.
