Back in the spring, when the NFL released the 2012 schedule, not many people would have guessed Miami at Indianapolis would be a meaningful game at this point in the season. Yet here we are, heading into Week 9, with the Dolphins and Colts - both led by rookie quarterbacks - hanging tough at 4-3 and in sole possession of second place in their respective divisions. This very easily could have been a situation in which one or both of these teams were still looking for their first victory.

At 2-13, the Houston Texans have the inside track on the No. 1 overall pick in May's NFL draft. But if the Texans were to win at Tennessee on Sunday, and Washington were to lose at the New York Giants, the Redskins, who had a weaker schedule, would get that prime pick … … and the honor of turning it over to St. Louis as part of the Robert Griffin III deal. :: For the 11th year in a row, the league will have at least one team go from worst to first in consecutive seasons.

The Oakland Raiders have been walloped by the Miami Dolphins for the second meeting in a row. That's Miami, with a rookie quarterback in Ryan Tannehill and Reggie Bush doing his best Darren McFadden imitation. Well, better than a McFadden imitation. The Raiders fell to 0-2 with a 35-13 loss at Miami on Sunday. Last season, Oakland dropped a 34-14 decision to the Dolphins in Miami. So maybe this was expected. Oakland Coach Dennis Allen will have to wait at least another week for his first victory.

After two weeks of close games, Week 3 was marked by blowouts. In nine of 15 games through Sunday, the victor won by at least 10 points, and Sunday included these lopsided finals: Carolina over the New York Giants, 38-0; Seattle over Jacksonville, 45-17; Indianapolis over San Francisco, 27-7; and Baltimore over Houston, 30-9. There were a handful of close games, however, three of which involved a trailing team scoring the game-winning points in the final minute. Cleveland clinched its win at Minnesota when Brian Hoyer threw a touchdown pass to Jordan Cameron with 51 seconds left.

Mike Wallace is heading for warmer weather. The NFL Network is reporting that the former Pittsburgh Steelers receiver has agreed to sign with the Miami Dolphins. Wallace made 235 receptions for 4,042 yards and 32 touchdowns in four seasons with the Steelers. In 2010, Wallace caught 60 balls for career highs in receiving yards (1,257 yards) and touchdowns (12), but his numbers have slightly declined since becoming the No. 1 option the previous two seasons. The Dolphins add a big-play threat for second-year quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Darrelle Revis was cleared for contact in practice Thursday for the first time since suffering a concussion in the season opener. That could be great news for the New York Jets, who could have used the star cornerback's services during a 27-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday. Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger completed passes to 10 different receivers and finished with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Revis' possible return is not such great news for Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who appeared to be making progress after a rough outing to start his NFL career.

David Garrard must really hate the week leading up to the start of the NFL season. For the second year in a row, it appears the veteran quarterback will be released five days before his team's opening game. Last year, it was the Jacksonville Jaguars; now it's the Miami Dolphins. Fox Sports' Jay Glazer tweeted Monday afternoon: "Just got a text from David Garrard that he is being released from Fins today. " Around the same time, Garrard posted a Twitter message of his own that seemed to confirm the report: "To all the dolphins fans thx for ur support!

The draft will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday in New York. Times NFL writer Sam Farmer examines team needs by division. Today, the East divisions: AFC East The Buffalo Bills are once again in search of a quarterback, and might reach for one with the eighth overall pick. An intriguing fit is Ryan Nassib, who played for new Bills Coach Doug Marrone and (new Bills offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett) at Syracuse. Even though the franchise broke the bank on pass rushers last off-season, the Bills could use more help in that department.

Few people know the 32 NFL teams better than the writers who cover those teams on a day-to-day basis. Those beat writers made the selections for this mock draft, choosing the players as if Thursday night were to unfold this way: 1. KANSAS CITY (Adam Teicher, Kansas City Star) - Luke Joeckel, T, Texas A&M: "With all the uncertainty over Branden Albert, the Chiefs need to do something to secure that position for the long term. That's a priority. " 2. JACKSONVILLE (Vito Stellino, Florida Times-Union)

Andrew Luck isn't as advertised. He's better. The rookie quarterback from Stanford has emerged as a physical and emotional leader for the Indianapolis Colts, a team that finished 2-14 last season and looked to be headed for a long winter of rebuilding without Peyton Manning. Last March, I spent 24 hours with Luck in Tampa, Fla., and got an up-close view of his maturity and humility. ESPN's Jon Gruden let me join them for Luck's session at "Gruden's QB Camp," that popular program in which the former coach puts the top NFL quarterback prospects through the paces on the white board and the field.

NAPA, Calif. - Dennis Allen is an NFL head coach for the first time, but he's got plenty of company. Four of the league's six new coaches have never held that position with any pro team, the others being Tampa Bay's Greg Schiano, Miami's Joe Philbin and Indianapolis' Chuck Pagano. Mike Mularkey, Jacksonville's new coach, coached Buffalo for two seasons, and St. Louis' Jeff Fisher is heading into his 17th season as a head coach - two years shy of Mike Shanahan's total experience and tied for second with Bill Belichick.

Wilson's impressive preseason performance propelled him to the top spot on the depth chart. The third-round selection from Wisconsin in this year's draft passed for 185 yards and two touchdowns, completing 13 of 19 attempts during his first preseason start against Kansas City on Friday night. He also rushed for 58 yards on two carries during the Seahawks' 44-14 trouncing of the Chiefs.

Brian Hartline is the all-time leader for the Miami Dolphins when it comes to receiving yards in a single game. He also leads the NFL in receiving yards so far this season. But none of that mattered to the fourth-year player Sunday after his team lost in overtime for the second straight week, 24-21 to the Arizona Cardinals, to drop to 1-3 this season. He called his franchise-record 253 yards receiving on 11 catches "bittersweet. " "If you win the game, it's awesome," Hartline said . "If you don't, it has the asterisk.
