But make no mistake, his primary role is scoring, and Friday he played his role to the hilt. Westendorf made 26 of 35 shots and scored 58 points--one of the four best single-game scoring performances in Orange County history--and St. Margaret's defeated St. Michael's Prep, 104-68.

Ryan Westendorf had 23 points and 24 rebounds to lead St. Margaret's to a 71-31 victory over visiting Newport Christian in an Academy League boys' basketball game Friday. Westendorf, who averages 18 rebounds a game to lead the county, had lots of help from Dann Campaigne, who had 23 points and 13 rebounds. Trevor Durham added 16 points, including three three-pointers. St. Margaret's improved to 9-4, 2-0 in league play. Newport Christian is 4-6, 1-1.

Loara's Tes Whitlock set the county record this season with 68 points. Whitlock also scored 58 this season. Westendorf made 26 of 35 shots from the field and six of 11 free throws. His previous career high was 43 points against Laguna Beach Dec. 14. St.

Dann Campaigne added 22 points and 13 rebounds for St. Margaret's, which improved to 11-4 overall and 4-0 in league play. St. Margaret's won its eighth consecutive game. St. Michael's 69, Cal Lutheran 64--John Taylor had 23 points to lead visiting St. Michael's. Brad Pluckham had 28 points for Cal Lutheran.

At the small schools level of high school basketball, where dunks are rarer than college basketball scholarships, Ryan Westendorf, The Times' Athlete of the Week, is special. In three years playing for St. Margaret's High School, Westendorf said he has seen only one other player make a dunk. This season, Westendorf, a 6-foot-7 junior, is shaking rims, rattling opponents and exciting audiences, averaging 27 points and 18 rebounds for St.

But listen to Coach Rick Bauer of St. Margaret's High School as he practically gushes about his 6-foot-7 center, and the nickname seems to fit. "He's a recruiter's dream because of his academic side," Bauer said. "He's a coach's dream because he's got a tremendous attitude and a great work ethic.

Center Ryan Westendorf scored 21 points to lead host St. Margaret's Episcopal School to its seventh Academy League victory without a defeat, a 58-45 decision over St. Michael's. St. Michael's (6-1 in league play) absorbed its first loss. Dann Campaigne scored 13 points and Jeff Hilgers had 10 for St. Margaret's (15-4 overall). St. Michael's was led by John Taylor's 18 points and Jocques Wright's 15.

St. Margaret's High School is the second-seeded team in the Southern Section Small Schools Division boys' basketball playoffs. The Tartans (17-4) have 14 consecutive basketball victories dating back to mid-December. They are led by center Ryan Westendorf, who is averaging 25 points and 19 rebounds. All four of the Tartans' losses came against 1-A schools and three were in the La Jolla tournament. "We had just gotten several of our players out from football," Coach Rick Bauer said.

In the 2-AA: Tehachapi 72, Whittier Christian 63--Brian McHome made six free throws down the stretch as Tehachapi (20-3) held off Whittier Christian at Brea-Olinda High School. Ruben Oronoz scored 18 and Joe Konstantarakis 14 for Whittier Christian. In the Small Schools: St. Margaret's 61, Pilgrim 60--Dann Campaigne made a 15-foot jump shot with three seconds left to give St. Margaret's the win at St. Margaret's. St.

Freshman center Ryan Westendorf scored 12 points and had 12 rebounds to lead St. Margaret's High School to a 70-53 Collegiate League victory over Elliott Pope Friday at St. Margaret's. The victory clinched St. Margaret's second consecutive league championship. Mark Flather led St. Margaret's scorers with 16 points. Chris Cooper added 13. In the Academy League: Whitney 63, Newport Christian 42--Whitney used a balanced attack, with 10 players scoring, to win at Newport Christian.
