General Motors Corp.'s Swedish-based subsidiary Saab went into court protection from creditors Friday so the unit could be spun off or sold by its struggling U.S. parent, officials said. The move is a last-ditch effort to get Saab in shape for sale, but the ailing brand is still in danger of collapse because neither GM nor the Swedish government appears ready to provide enough money to keep it going as a free-standing entity.

A woman was killed early Saturday when the Saab she was driving ran off the road. She was not identified pending notification of relatives. The accident occurred about 2 a.m. when the car failed to make a turn while traveling rapidly north on San Miguel Drive at Ford Road. The Saab hit a metal awning support and came to rest in the parking lot of the Bonita Canyon Sports Park. Police said they did not know whether alcohol was a factor. The cause of the accident was under investigation.

At last year's North American International Auto Show, General Motors Corp. introduced the Chevy Volt, a futuristic concept car that ran largely on battery power and boldly promised to fundamentally change the way we tank up. On Sunday at the start of this year's show, GM took center stage to unveil two concept cars -- and neither came with lithium-ion batteries.

FEW commercials in history are more cringe-worthy than those of Saab's current "Born From Jets" campaign, in which a Swedish-built Saab Viggen fighter morphs into ... wait for it ... a Saab 9-7X SUV -- Yah, Sven, dat's a guut one. As most devoted Saab-omites know, the 9-7X is born from the rather less-than-jet-like Chevy Trailblazer, built and re-badged in that famous Scandinavian enclave of Moraine, Ohio.

General Motors Corp. board member Jerry York is now convinced that the Saab and Hummer brands are good for the automaker, a month after he had suggested GM get rid of them, said Bob Lutz, GM's vice chairman of global product development. "Saab has really turned the corner," Lutz said before the Geneva Auto Show. "It is close to making money as a brand." "Jerry made all those comments before he joined the board," he added. York had urged the No.

The 2004 Jaguar X-Type got the worst rating of any midsize sedan in side-impact crash tests conducted by the insurance industry. The X-Type, which starts at $31,000, fared worse than some less expensive cars, according to test results released Sunday by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The institute's test measures the impact on dummies in the front and back seats of a sedan that is struck in the side by a sport utility vehicle traveling 31 mph.

Alert police officers who stopped a suspicious man driving to work and persuaded him to provide an oral swab may have stopped a serial rapist who sexually assaulted four women in Westchester, authorities said Thursday. Jerome Green, 38, was linked through DNA to one victim, police alleged. Green has pleaded not guilty, and is being held in lieu of $11 million bail. "This was a case of some very good police work on the part of patrol officers and the detectives," said LAPD Capt.

Saab calls the color of our 9-3 Aero convertible test car Lime Yellow, a name that hardly does justice to its eye-crossing intensity. How about Hyperbaric Chartreuse? Metrosexual Melon? By any name, the new paint option -- featured in the company's press materials and advertising for the car -- makes a bold statement about the redesigned 9-3 convertible: It's here, it's Swedish, get used to it.

Saab is known for doing things differently. The automaker from Trollhattan, Sweden, has a long, proud, oddball tradition. For years, Saab has mounted its ignition in the center console, produced front-wheel-drive automobiles when others hadn't thought about it and designed cars with hatchbacks in a world of notchbacks (or trunks.) It's the latter that is the 2003 Saab 9-3's most notable change, one that will surely puzzle Saab fans. The new 9-3 has a trunk.
