The family of Sabrina Haley, an 18-month-old girl slain by gunfire apparently aimed at her father, appealed Thursday for help from the public in identifying and apprehending the men who committed what one veteran policeman called "a senseless act of violence." "All this gang violence needs to stop," said Angelina Lindsay, the girl's cousin, choking back tears. "I want to see justice done."

Standing before a small white coffin, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony said Wednesday that two small girls gunned down last week are martyrs of gang warfare and called on residents citywide to have the courage to rise up against gangs. Mahony delivered the stern words to about 300 mourners attending funeral services for 3-year-old Denise Silva of Boyle Heights. He said each member of the community must take responsibility for escalating gang violence.

Two gang members have been arrested on suspicion of murdering an 18-month-old girl who was fatally wounded by gunfire apparently aimed at her father, Los Angeles police said Monday. Los Angeles Police Detective William Baird said James Taylor, 22, and Everett Butler, 19, were arrested Saturday night at the California Medical Center, where one of them had undergone treatment for a seizure. Anonymous tips helped lead to the identification of the two men, Baird said.

Sunday's paper made for some pretty tough reading. It was hard to concentrate on anything but the picture of Denise Silva. After every story I read, it pulled me back like a magnet. There she is, with brown bangs and a big bow and chiffon sleeves, her arms around her year-old sister, Stephanie. Or there she was, anyway. Denise was gunned down in Boyle Heights on Friday night. She was walking with her father to the corner market, holding his hand.

Eight months later, Eric Smith is still afraid to go outside. Last January, the 9-year-old was shot in the head by a robber while visiting his grandfather in South-Central Los Angeles. Although the shy fifth-grader is back at 24th Street Elementary School, he's not ready to rejoin the Little League. "I like baseball," Eric said. "I used to play . . . but not anymore."

Before the riots or after, life hasn't changed much for some Los Angeles homicide detectives. Another round of random gunshots, another innocent victim. On Thursday, 9-year-old Ramon Sanchez died after he was struck in the head by a stray bullet fired near his parents' home in Watts. Police don't know who fired the shots or why. They only have a few grim details and a lot of questions.
