A charter school petition sought by former NBA player Kevin Johnson to revive his troubled Sacramento high school is invalid and must be rescinded, a judge ruled Monday. The decision in Sacramento County Superior Court did not, however, reverse the school board's decision to close Sacramento High as of June 30 and seek to establish a charter school in its place. The ruling makes the future of the school uncertain.

A California high school teacher suspected of murdering his wife and leaving his children alone with her body for 10 days was arrested Friday in Mexico, police said. Mexican authorities arrested Robert Castorena, 38, without incident at an apartment in San Miguel de Allende, about 250 miles northwest of Mexico City, Sacramento police said. The police said they were able to trace Castorena because he had been using his credit and bank cash cards.

Federal authorities investigating a nonprofit program run by mayoral candidate and former NBA star Kevin Johnson have suspended its funding after finding possible criminal and financial irregularities, officials announced Thursday. Johnson and his St. Hope Academy have been barred from receiving or spending federal funds for up to a year or until the ongoing investigation is concluded.

Scott Barrick, Fallbrook High School's quarterback who led the team to the San Diego Section 3-A title, was named the state's offensive player of the year by Cal-Hi Sports, a Sacramento-based, high school-oriented newsletter. Barrick, whose 3,503 yards passing set a state single-season record, was one of four San Diego Section players named to the All-State offensive team.

Laguna Hills High School is the winner of the 1988 10th-grade Orange County Academic Decathlon, the Orange County Department of Education announced. The sophomore-level decathlon involves competition in 10 academic contests. A total of 43 high schools in Orange County competed in this year's event.

SACRAMENTO — High school students waiting to have senior portraits taken once filled Richard Givens' photography studio in Rancho Cordova, Calif. Now that studio holds all his worldly possessions. The career school photographer rented out his spacious home a couple of years ago and moved into his studio to make ends meet. The small, independent local school photographer — and others like him — are being squeezed out by increased competition from big national companies, an economy that has left families with little discretionary income and a decrease in interest from teens who would rather use cellphones to take pictures and immediately post them online.

Alain Corneau Acclaimed French filmmaker Alain Corneau, 67, the French filmmaker who leapt to international notice with the 1991 hit "Tous les Matins du Monde," died Monday after suffering from cancer, Artmedia talent agency said in Paris. Throughout a career lasting more than 35 years, Corneau directed many legends of French cinema, including Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu. Depardieu starred alongside his son Guillaume in "Tous les Matins du Monde" ("All the Mornings of the World")
