You can use statistics to say whatever you want to say. UCLA's basketball team beat Northwestern on Friday to run its record to 7-0. Their Twitter feed boldly announced: “ @UCLAMBB UCLA's Steve Alford has become the program's first-ever head coach to lead the Bruins to a 7-0 record in his first season at the helm” Holy John Wooden! Ah, but there's fine print: UCLA has played Drexel, Oakland, Sacramento State, Morehead State, Chattanooga, Nevada and Northwestern.

It is the time of the season when good basketball teams schedule ones that aren't so good. And so we get games such as the one at Pauley Pavilion on Monday night. The arena was maybe a third full and UCLA needed a big run to end the first half to make this game feel safe for the Bruins. But 22nd-ranked UCLA (3-0) had that 16-6 flurry to finish the first half and the Bruins ended up beating Sacramento State, 86-50. An alley-oop pass from Kyle Anderson to Norman Powell that ended with a slam dunk for Powell and a 40-23 UCLA lead early in the second half did bring some of the sparse crowd to life.

Five things to watch this week in college football. 1. Alabama at Texas A&M is what makes college football different from other sports. It is an early high-stakes game dripping with drama. Texas A&M is the only team last year to defeat Alabama, which still won the Bowl Championship Series title. As coach of Louisiana State and Alabama, Nick Saban is 15-2 against teams that beat him in previous meetings. 2. Tennessee travels cross-country to play Oregon in a game that will test a middle-of-the-road Southeastern Conference team against an elite Pac-12 squad.

The schedule for Steve Alford's first season as UCLA's basketball coach comes dressed for success. The Bruins do have a date with Duke in Madison Square Garden on Dec. 19, and there is a potentially rough trip to Missouri on Dec. 7. But five of nine nonconference opponents failed to crack .500 last season, including the Bruins' first four opponents -- Drexel, Oakland, Sacramento State and UC Santa Barbara. UCLA will play in the Las Vegas Invitational, but only two of the other seven teams in the tournament had winning records in 2012-13.

LA MESA, Calif. - To Pat Wright, his beloved Fausto, Bailey and Tiger are smart, impish and endlessly entertaining, a counterbalance to the dreariness of modern life. To the state of California, the three domestic ferrets are outlaws, and Wright is a criminal for harboring them. California is one of only two states - Hawaii is the other - that ban the ownership of domestic ferrets. The California Fish and Wildlife Department fears that pet ferrets, a nonnative species, could escape, go feral and prey on native species and out-compete them for food.
