Pastor Kelly Walter has a simple explanation for using a week of precious vacation to make a 1,700-mile annual pilgrimage to a Southern California church: "The place just oozes grace." His unlikely-looking mecca is Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, housed on a 120-acre campus of earth-tone, Mediterranean-style buildings, manicured lawns and endless parking lots near the base of the Santa Ana Mountains. July 17, 1999 | Rick Warren, Dr. Rick Warren is the founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, the largest church in California, and author of "The Purpose Driven Church."
In 1965, there were only 93 churches in America that averaged over 1,000 in attendance. Today there are more than 8,000 of these larger churches in our nation, with many here in Southern California. Contrary to the claims of some pundits, the trend toward larger churches is not abating. Last year, another American church joined the above-1,000 category every three days. Large congregations are nothing new to Christianity.

Maybe it was the rain pelting Balboa Park. Maybe it was the toll of so many years on the streets, measured in missing teeth and weathered skin, a deep scar running up a taut belly. Whatever the reason, the man they call Dollar Bill said he was thinking that maybe it was time to find a place to live. "I'm tired of the streets, baby doll," he told Estreanda Fulford. "And they're probably tired of you," Fulford replied. Fulford, a social worker for San Diego County, is in daily contact with the homeless, the formerly homeless and the soon-to-be homeless.

Olympic track champion Florence Griffith Joyner was eulogized Saturday as a woman of great stamina and style who motivated countless young athletes with her speed and inspired her family with her grace and faith. "She just ran, and ran, and ran. She ran spectacular races," her former coach, Bob Kersee, told the crowd of 1,500 as he stood beneath an Olympic flag at Saddleback Community Church. "What was in her heart, every time she laced up her spikes, was Jesus." He added: "God is her coach now.

With tears and laughter, hundreds of friends and relatives Tuesday celebrated the life of Allyssa Squirrell, the 11-year-old girl who died last week after she was hit by a boat propeller during a Junior Lifeguard training exercise off Huntington Beach. Inside Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, they recalled a lively girl who always had a smile on her face and loved to write songs. They used colored markers to write notes to Allyssa on construction paper.

Rick Warren, a superstar pastor in the megachurch movement, will kick off one of the most ambitious book promotions in Christian publishing history today by beaming via satellite a sermon based on his book to an estimated 500,000 people in 1,500 churches worldwide. The campaign for the book, "The Purpose-Driven Life," is called "40 Days of Purpose" and is meant to be a 21st century form of Sunday school for Christian adults who are fuzzy on the fundamentals of living a God-centered life.

"Home Run" is the heartfelt and deeply religious story of a baseball star's struggle with alcoholism and the Christian faith-based recovery group that gets him through. The first moments seem promising as images of a peaceful stretch of farm country fill up the screen. A weathered red barn sits in the distance next to a sprawling white farmhouse with a wraparound porch. But as the camera goes in close, something is wrong - the red is too red, the worn spots too worn. The metaphor is seriously overplayed and we are only in the first inning.
