A fire that killed a student in a Saddleback College classroom in Orange County was set deliberately, authorities said Tuesday. The fire broke out about 6:30 a.m. Monday in a third-floor auditorium in the college's Business/General Studies building, school officials said. As firefighters battled the flames, which scorched much of the classroom's interior, they found a 21-year-old male student lying unconscious on the floor, said school spokeswoman Jennie McCue. The student was burned head to toe, was not breathing and had no pulse, authorities said.

A fire that scorched a lecture hall at Saddleback College may have been started by the student who ultimately died from the blaze, authorities said Tuesday. The fire broke out about 6:30 a.m. Monday in a third-floor auditorium in the college's Business/General Studies building, school officials said. As firefighters battled the flames, which scorched much of the classroom's interior, they found a 21-year-old male student unconscious on the floor, said school spokeswoman Jennie McCue.

A shallow magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported Monday afternoon eight  miles from San Jose, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 12:02 p.m. Pacific time at a depth of 5.0 miles. According to the USGS, the epicenter was three miles from East Foothills, Calif; four miles from Alum Rock; six miles from Milpitas; and 80 miles from Sacramento, California. A student who died of burns suffered during a fire inside a Saddleback College classroom committed suicide, the Orange County Coroner concluded. Jacob Mathews, 21, of Lake Forest, died after a fire he started July 8 in a third-floor auditorium in the community college's Business/General Studies building. The fire broke out about 6:30 a.m. and Mathews was scheduled to attend a social psychology class there about half an hour later, school officials said. Firefighters found Mathews lying unconscious and without a pulse inside the classroom, where they battled flames that caused an estimated $400,000 in damage.

Saddleback College in Mission Viejo held its 18th commencement Friday evening in the campus gymnasium. Degrees: 650 associate in arts and 100 associate in science degrees. Speakers: Featured speaker was Prof. Lee Haggerty of the social science division. The student speaker was Penny Hughes, president of the Associated Students. Saddleback College President Ned Doffoney announced his resignation Monday, becoming the fourth ranking administrator to leave the district or announce a departure in a year. Doffoney, 47, will leave to become founding president of South Louisiana Community College in Lafayette, about 30 miles from where he grew up. "My stay at Saddleback College has been both challenging and rewarding," Doffoney said in a prepared statement.

South County stargazers can get a closer look at Comet Hale-Bopp at a viewing party Monday at Saddleback College. Astronomy professors Yong Kim and Mitch Haeri will open the college's observatory so that visitors may see the comet through a high-magnification refracting telescope. Smaller telescopes will also be set up in parking lots 9 and 10 for public use. The free comet party will start at 7 p.m. in the observatory atop the science and mathematics building.

Freshman center Cheryl Eiland had 22 points, 26 rebounds and 10 blocked shots to lead Saddleback College to a 95-43 win over Glendale in a women's basketball season opener Tuesday night at Saddleback. Eiland combined with sophomore Connie Waikle to dominate play around the basket. Waikle had 18 points, 18 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Sue Siam led Glendale scorers with 13 points.

With the new school year in full swing, Saddleback College is experiencing a surge in enrollment, with more than 850 additional students this year over last. On Sept. 3, after two weeks of school, Saddleback reported to the state that 21,899 students were registered, a 4% increase from a year ago, college officials said.
