I take umbrage with the two articles you published about retirement communities, especially Leisure World Laguna Hills. It is my impression that many of the people you mentioned would not have lived this long had they not lived in such a community. Many of us who are residents of Leisure World Laguna Hills and are senior citizens lead a very active life here. Of the 22,000 residents of this community, 9,000 are enrolled in diversified programs in the Saddleback College Emeritus Institute and participate quite actively.

What student hasn't dreamed about life without homework, classes without note-taking and playing hooky without getting busted? About 8,700 students who are enrolled in Saddleback College's Emeritus Institute live that dream. Among them are retired aerospace engineers, doctors and people with Ph.D.s who believe that life is a never-ending school and they must sit in the front row. These are students who no longer see education as a passport to a lucrative job or a decent career.

Some Laguna Hills stockbrokers enjoy telling how Dean Witter all but backed into its Orange County offices next to the main gate of Leisure World. The brokerage company's regional headquarters in Laguna Beach had opened a small satellite office in Laguna Hills in 1975.
