Two young men were in custody Friday in connection with a fatal shooting in front of a Lake Forest home, authorities said. Deputies with the Orange County Sheriff's Department found the victim, Luis Alejandro Rivera, 22, on a sidewalk in the 24000 block of Ankerton Drive shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday. He died at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills. A dark sedan was seen fleeing the scene, Sheriff's Department spokesman Jim Amormino said. About 5:30 a.m. Friday, deputies arrested Edgar Cavillo, 19, of Santa Ana on suspicion of being the triggerman.

Helen Kalvin thought she was giving the folks at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center a good idea. Because so many patients at the Laguna Hills facility are elderly, why not put up a shelter to partially enclose the three benches in the center's parking lot that otherwise are exposed to the elements? You know, like at a bus stop.

An elderly Laguna Woods couple whose charity to Saddleback Memorial Medical Center began with a $90 contribution 33 years ago has given the hospital its largest contribution ever: $50 million. "We're very excited," Jennifer Lefebvre, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit hospital's funding foundation, said of the gift from Bill and Louise Meiklejohn, both 85. "We rely [greatly] on philanthropy. This is extraordinary."

A 79-year-old man was killed Friday when his car plowed into the back of another vehicle, then careened into a pole at a Laguna Hills intersection, authorities said. Marvin Eisen of Laguna Woods was pronounced dead at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center about 35 minutes after the 5 p.m. crash, Orange County coroner's officials said. Witnesses told coroner's investigators that they saw Eisen slump over inside his 1996 Buick Le Sabre moments before the accident, Deputy Coroner Joseph Luckey said.

Saddleback Memorial Medical Center is registering couples for its one-night "Preventing Pre-term Delivery" class Dec. 13. The class is offered for parents who may be at risk of delivering a baby prematurely. The cost is $25 a couple and will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the hospital at 24451 Health Center Drive.
