The sisters of St. Gertrud's rise 2 1/2 hours before dawn on winter mornings, climbing out of narrow beds in unheated cells, pulling on black habits and sandals and hastening over cold tile floors to Lauds, their chanted morning prayers. "Domine labia mea aperies, et os meum annuntiabit lauden tuam." Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall proclaim thy praise.
