Lodged between fact and fiction is Schea Cotton, an exceptionally talented 16-year-old basketball player who has had difficulty handling many of the trappings that come with success. "Sometimes, I wonder if I'm just a regular person," Cotton said. One of the nation's most sought-after prep players, Cotton has caused much speculation because of his return to Bellflower St. John Bosco High after spending nearly two full seasons playing for Mater Dei.

It was a little bit therapeutic, and a touch defiant. It was a game. It was just right. St. John Bosco hosted Bellflower Friday night, with all the normal trappings of a high school football game: the cheerleaders, the off-key bands, the cheap hot dogs, the fun. The only depressing sight was the American flag hanging at half staff beyond the western end zone, a solemn tribute to the lives lost in the terrorist attacks on the United States on Tuesday. St.

Most of Cotton's career has been a trail of confusing rumors, innuendo and excuses. That path, however, has also included some incredible, I-can't-believe- I'm-watching- a-high- school-player performances. He was the talk of the Parochial Athletic League when he was a muscular, 6-foot, 180-pound sixth-grader. After helping Mater Dei win consecutive Southern Section titles, including the state Division I championship as a sophomore in 1995, Cotton abruptly pulled up stakes.

Jelani Gardner, a 6-foot-6 senior point guard, scored 12 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter to carry No. 6-ranked Bellflower St. John Bosco to a 55-54 victory over No. 3 Compton Dominguez High in the Southern Section Division II-A championship Saturday at Anaheim Arena. "We tried to throw everything at him we could and get the ball out of his hands," Dominguez Coach Russell Otis said. Leading 53-51, St. John Bosco (28-2) got possession after a steal by Gardner with 24 seconds left.

Brian Breslin has established a winning boys' basketball program at St. John Bosco High in Bellflower the last three years. Now, it may be getting the best of him. With his team struggling halfway through the season with an 8-7 record, the critics have been loud and heard from often. It doesn't matter that the Braves started 8-0 and have lost seven in a row, largely because of injuries to key players. The bottom line for many is the record.

Four years and one head coaching job later, Jerry Person is getting a second chance at St. John Bosco High School. Never mind that Person is inheriting a program that has struggled to a 10-19 record the last three seasons. Or that St. John Bosco had only 42 varsity players last season. Person has been given another opportunity to be a head football coach and that's good enough for him.
