The 1992 State Division I boys' championship game was billed as a matchup of the state's best player, Jason Kidd, versus the state's best team, Mater Dei. Well, at least one of the two opponents lived up to the billing. Kidd, the multitalented guard from Alameda St. Joseph, put on quite a show Saturday night as his team rolled to a 59-37 victory in front of 15,788 fans at the Arco Arena. Kidd, playing his final high school game, scored 28 points, had nine rebounds and added three assists as St.

Kamran Sufi could see a State championship slipping away. The thrill of playing in the big game in front of a big crowd had been replaced with the pain of a 22-point loss. So Sufi, one of four junior starters, took a large dose of reality, assessed the damage and decided to reflect upon next season in the final moments of Mater Dei's 59-37 loss to Alameda St. Joseph in front of 15,788 in the Arco Arena. "My first thought was that we're losing (senior) Reggie Geary," Sufi said.

It was a day of mixed emotions for Orange County high school basketball as the Brea-Olinda girls won but the Mater Dei boys lost Saturday in state championship games at the Arco Arena. Brea won its third title in four years by defeating Healdsburg, 47-44, in the Division III final. Guard Nicole Erickson made a three-point shot with a minute and a half remaining for the winning points.

Eric Stanley Trueblood , an explosive ordnance disposal specialist, was stationed in Germany but had flown back to his Bay Area hometown of Alameda as soon as he heard his father had suffered a stroke linked to congestive heart failure. He decided I shouldn't live where I was living and that I needed to take care of myself.
