The Tim Burton-directed animated feature "Frankenweenie" debuted at the top of the DVD sales charts, while "Looper" remained the most popular rental in the U.S. in the second week of January. The horror movie "House at the End of the Street," meanwhile, was the most popular video-on-demand rental. Walt Disney Studios' animated films have remained relatively popular purchases amid a long-running DVD slump, and "Frankenweenie" continued that trend, despite not having performed well at the box office.

The animated comedy "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" ate the competition's lunch in its home video debut. The children's sequel, complete with food/animal hybrids, was the top-selling DVD and Blu-ray title in its first week in release. Featuring the voices of Bill Hader and Anna Faris, "Cloudy" was a box-office success for Sony Pictures Animation last year, generating about $265 million in worldwide ticket sales, a little less than half of which came from the U.S. and Canada.

Fox's "Skyfall" remained atop the DVD sales chart for the second consecutive week since its release, holding on to the top spot despite last week's DVD release of the Academy Award-winning "Argo. " Last week's No. 2 seller, Disney's "Hotel Transylvania," was knocked out of the top five with new releases such as "Argo," a re-release of Disney's "Monster's Inc. and the second season of HBO hit show "Game of Thrones" soaring to the top of the sales chart, during the week ending Feb. 23.  On the rentals chart, "Taken 2" claimed the top spot in its sixth week since release, edging out Denzel Washingon's "Flight," which was the previous period's most rented DVD, for the week ending Feb 24. Below are the 10 most sold and rented movie discs, according to Rentrak.

The Somali pirate hijacking drama "Captain Phillips" has commandeered the home video market. The Tom Hanks film, directed by Paul Greengrass, was the bestselling DVD and Blu-ray title in its first week in release, according to Rentrak. "Captain Phillips" is nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture, and has generated $217 million in worldwide ticket sales.  Also debuting were the critically panned action picture "Machete Kills," about a man hired to take on a billionaire arms dealer, and the PG-13 bilingual comedy "Instructions Not Included.

The raunchy adult comedy “Ted” beat a pair of action films in pre-holiday sales of DVD and Blu-ray discs, with humor trumping the final installment of director Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, “The Dark Knight Rises,” and newcomer “The Bourne Legacy” as well as the animated “Ice Age: Continental Drift.” But “Ted” barely cracked the top 10 when it came to DVD and Blu-ray rentals. Summit Entertainment's “Twilight Saga” vampire series landed two titles on the most recent top 10 DVD sales charts, while the tense dramas “Taken 2” and “Flight” retained their top positions on the rental charts. The animated feature "Brave" debuted at the top of the DVD sales chart, but couldn't knock "The Amazing Spider-Man" from the top of the rental chart. Pixar's "Brave" was the top selling DVD and Blu-ray disc in the U.S. during the week ended Nov. 18, according to research firm Rentrak, but the No. 4 rented movie. In its second week on shelves, the "Spider-Man" reboot fell to No. 2 on the sales chart. Other high-profile new releases were the Oliver Stone-directed drama "Savages," which debuted at No. 3 on the sales chart, and Ben Stiller-Vince Vaughn comedy "The Watch," which launched at No. 4. Neither was immediately available to rent from Redbox or Netflix and thus did not make Rentrak's rental chart.

The fifth season of the HBO vampire series "True Blood" grabbed the top spot on the DVD and Blu-ray sales chart, while action flick "Jack Reacher" starring Tom Cruise took the top spot aong rentals. A trio of new releases have ended the reign of "Despicable Me 2" over the home video market, according to rankings from Rentrak.  The Vin Diesel sci-fi sequel "Riddick" was the best-selling DVD and Blu-ray title in its first week in release, coming in ahead of the White House drama "Lee Daniels' The Butler" and the horror remake "Carrie. " "Despicable Me 2," the animated comedy that topped the list for five straight weeks, fell to fourth place. "Riddick" is the third installment in the "Chronicles of Riddick" series, which began with the 2000 release "Pitch Black" and continued with 2004's "The Chronicles of Riddick.

A mutant comic book hero and a crew of little blue children's characters ruled the home video sales chart in their first weeks in release.  "The Wolverine," the sixth film in 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" franchise, was the top-selling DVD and Blu-ray title for the week that ended Dec. 7, according to Rentrak. Starring Hugh Jackman as the title character, the movie made $132 million in its domestic box office run. Critics generally approved of the entry, which earned a 69% "fresh" rating from Rotten Tomatoes.  On the set: movies and TV "The Smurfs 2," a critically panned sequel with Neil Patrick Harris, took second place, while the teen action-adventure "Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" debuted in fourth, behind the three-week-old computer animated Disney movie disc "Planes.

Warner Bros.' Superman movie "Man of Steel" flew high in its first week of release in the home entertainment market, landing as the top-selling DVD and Blu-ray title. Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill as Clark Kent, the film made $291 million in ticket sales.  "Man of Steel" beat "Turbo," the Dreamworks Animation-produced and Fox-distributed 3-D and computer-animated children's movie, which debuted in second place. Britney Spears' "Circus" took the singer back to the top of the national sales chart after selling 505,000 copies during its first week of release. Billboard noted that it makes her the first act with four albums to sell 500,000 or more copies out of the gate. Spears had been tied at three with Jay-Z, Garth Brooks, 2Pac and 50 Cent. It is her fifth No. 1 album. "Circus" was the only album to debut in the Top 20 this week. Other new chart entries included Scarface's "Emeritus," which entered at No. 24 on sales of 42,000, and Neil Young's "Sugar Mountain -- Live at Canterbury House 1968," starting out at No. 40 with 26,000 copies.

MAROON 5's "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" might have a brow-furrowing title, but the numbers are clear. With first week sales of 429,000, the pop-R&B band's second album entered the national sales chart at No. 1 Wednesday, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the second-highest debut week in 2007 and the second straight strong showing for a Los Angeles band.

The Wolf Pack is taking a bite out of the home entertainment market.  "The Hangover Part III," the final installment of the trilogy starring Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms, was the top-selling DVD and Blu-ray title in its first week in release, according to Rentrak.  The film grossed more than $112 million domestically at the box office and $351 million worldwide, which is less than each of the first two "Hangover" movies made....
