Top-seeded Jose Luis Noriega of the University of San Diego defeated Bill Kearsley of San Diego State, 6-3, 6-0, Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the San Diego All-College tournament at USD. Second-seeded David Stewart of USD also advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hans Hoegstedt of Point Loma Nazarene. USD's Dan Mattera, J.R. Edwards and Mark Farren also won, giving the Toreros 5 of the final 8 players still in the tournament.

Top-seeded Mike Briggs and Ross Case defeated Steve Schultz and Chris Merrill, 6-3, 6-4, Monday in the quarterfinals of the men's open division of the 24th Adoption Guild Tennis Tournament at the John Wayne Tennis Club. Briggs and Case, the tournament's defending champions, will meet UC Irvine's Julian Barham and Darren Yates in the semifinals. Barham and Yates beat Anteater teammates Ken Derr and Art Hernandez, 7-6, 7-6.

The finals in the Head Grand Prix Masters tournament are set for today at the Rancho Bernardo Inn in San Diego. The tournament marks the end of the Southern California senior tennis season. The top eight point winners in the 53-tournament Grand Prix circuit advanced to the Masters' draw. Sally Huss of Laguna Niguel earned more than 1,000 points and qualified for the Masters in three age divisions. Since the rules don't allow her to play in more than one, Huss will compete in the women's 35.

The San Diego State women's volleyball team, which tied for fifth place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association with an 8-8 record and 25-18 overall mark, opens play against third-place Hawaii today in the PCAA's post-season tournament at University of Pacific. The 18th-ranked Aztecs' match against the No. 11 Rainbows (25-9, 10-6) starts this afternoon at 1, opening the eight-team, three-day tournament. Four matches will be played today, with the winners advancing to the semifinals Saturday.

Diane Matzner of Austin, Tex., defeated Sally Huss of Bonsall, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, in the final of the women's 40s division of the National Hardcourt Tennis Championships Sunday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Matzner, the fifth-seeded player, used a consistent baseline game against eighth-seeded Huss, who played more of a power game.

Pancho Gonzalez and Sally Huss, a Wimbledon semifinalist, will be among those competing in the Converse Grand Prix Masters tennis tournament at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Wednesday through Sunday. There is no admission charge. Gonzalez, of Las Vegas, will team with Bill Davis of Rancho Mirage in the Men's 55 doubles and Huss is the favorite in the women's 45 singles. The top eight singles and top four doubles teams on the Grand Prix circuit will compete in men's and women's age-groups.

The event: 37th Annual All Guilds fashion shows staged by Children's Hospital of Orange County in Orange. The luncheons, held Thursday and Friday at the Anaheim Marriott, raised funds for CHOC's outpatient clinic. Day at the beach: In keeping with the California Dreamin' theme, guests sat beneath colorful beach umbrellas at tables decorated with beach balls, sand toys and straw hats. "I love California, bright colors, the sand and the sea," said Sylvia Burnett, event chairwoman.

Unseeded Mike Rabbitt of La Jolla upset second-seeded Gordon Davis of Santa Monica, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6, to reach the men's 45 division final in the Southern California Senior Grand Prix Masters Tennis Tournament at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. Rabbitt's victory ended the chance for a rematch between Davis and top-seeded Jim Perley of Coronado. Perley defeated Jim Nelson of Newport Beach, 7-6, 6-4. Davis and Perley, both 50, have split two meetings in major tournaments this year.
