Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs will be prosecuted first in Utah, then in Arizona, on charges that he arranged marriages of underage girls to older men, authorities said in Salt Lake City. Utah prosecutors agreed to try Jeffs first because they believed they had a stronger case and more serious charges, including two counts of rape by accomplice, which accuse Jeffs of forcing a girl to marry an older man and submit to him sexually.

The USA Olympic Daily, a USOC publication for the media, chooses not to identify NBA stars by their teams, instead listing the city they play in as if it's the player's hometown. Today's edition listed: Karl Malone (Salt Lake City, Utah); Scottie Pippen (Chicago, Ill.; David Robinson (San Antonio, Texas); Olajuwon (Houston, Texas) and Shaquille O'Neal (Orlando, Fla.). Apparently the Lakers' $120-million deal with O'Neal hasn't made him an Angeleno in the eyes of the USOC.

The Redondo Union High School drill team has been selected to perform at the pre-Olympic festivities in Atlanta in July. It is the only cheerleading squad in Southern California invited to participate in the event. Sky's the Limit Productions in Salt Lake City, Utah, which is coordinating entertainment for the Olympic Games, invited 50 schools nationwide to perform.

Coyote Network Systems of Westlake Village said it has canceled its proposed acquisition of Apollo Telecom Inc., citing recent downturns in Apollo's domestic market. In February, Coyote had announced a plan to buy Apollo for 350,000 shares of Coyote common stock. Coyote said it would continue to work with parent company Apollo KK of Tokyo, as an Asian distributor of Coyote products.
