Art and architecture blend seamlessly in this contemporary Laguna Beach home in the private community of Irvine Cove. A heavily detailed three-quarter-inch layer of French limestone encloses the steel-framed structure, creating the illusion that it's one, monolithic column of limestone. On both sides of the main entry, curved glass panels are accented with rivets. A bridge leading from the entrance to the great room crosses over the atrium. Inside the gallery-styled great room, an art wall features a sculptured circular black brick fireplace with stainless steel trim.

The Rat Pack lives again -- or at least Palm Springs, once the party pad of Sinatra and the boys, does. The Coachella Valley city, which had devolved into a caricature of a Hollywood playground, has reinvented itself: Its retro-chic look, striking scenery and hip hotels and restaurants are drawing a new generation of visitors. And, of course, there's always the weather, a tourist attraction on its own (in winter, anyway). The city prides itself on having 350 days of sunshine a year, a siren song that plays loudly and clearly in Canada and other frosty North America realms in the depths of winter.

Despite the NBA player lockout, new Lakers head coach Mike Brown is busy setting up shop at the office and at home. Brown and his wife, Carolyn, closed a $3-million deal last month for a house in a gated Anaheim Hills community. That will be quite a drive to Staples Center and even a longer one to the Lakers offices and training center in El Segundo. Perhaps Kobe Bryant can swing by to pick him up on his way from Newport Coast. Although Brown declined to comment on the purchase, a Laker spokesman said the coach wanted his children to attend a high school near his new house, so he was willing to make the long commute.
