Despite the NBA player lockout, new Lakers head coach Mike Brown is busy setting up shop at the office and at home. Brown and his wife, Carolyn, closed a $3-million deal last month for a house in a gated Anaheim Hills community. That will be quite a drive to Staples Center and even a longer one to the Lakers offices and training center in El Segundo. Perhaps Kobe Bryant can swing by to pick him up on his way from Newport Coast. Although Brown declined to comment on the purchase, a Laker spokesman said the coach wanted his children to attend a high school near his new house, so he was willing to make the long commute.

You could call it a shorts sale. Tom Lennon, the pants-averse Lt. Jim Dangle on Comedy Central's "Reno 911!" (2003-09), and his actress wife, Jenny Robertson, have purchased a Hancock Park-area house for $2,175,000. The seller was "ER" actress Maura Tierney, who had owned the 1913 Craftsman for nearly seven years. The two-story, 3,051-square-foot home has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. It has been restored and features built-in vintage cabinetry, period details and a living room fireplace.

The MJ Ranch -- M for Michael Schoff, J for Jeanne Hollingsworth -- sits on 249 bucolic acres in the Santa Ynez Valley community of Los Olivos. Completed two years ago, it has a Mediterranean-style main house, with views of the mountains, valley and 400-year-old oaks; guest quarters; a barn; and a tractor shed with room for six cars. What it doesn't have is noise -- there are no neighbors for miles.

Art and architecture blend seamlessly in this contemporary Laguna Beach home in the private community of Irvine Cove. A heavily detailed three-quarter-inch layer of French limestone encloses the steel-framed structure, creating the illusion that it's one, monolithic column of limestone. On both sides of the main entry, curved glass panels are accented with rivets. A bridge leading from the entrance to the great room crosses over the atrium. Inside the gallery-styled great room, an art wall features a sculptured circular black brick fireplace with stainless steel trim.

Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores and his wife, Holly, have listed their house in gated Mulholland Estates at $10.75 million. Although the Multiple Listing Service considers the community in the 90210 ZIP Code to be the Beverly Hills Post Office area, The Times' Mapping L.A. database shows the mansion sits within Sherman Oaks. The Mediterranean, custom built in 1992, features a family room with exposed beams, a paneled library, two bars, five fireplaces, a screening room, six bedrooms and eight bathrooms in 11,107 square feet.

Recently terminated USC head football coach Lane Kiffin and his wife, Layla, have listed their home in Manhattan Beach at $6.995 million. The couple bought the house last year for $5.5 million. The upscale beach city has long been popular with college and professional coaches and athletes, in part because of its proximity to Los Angeles International Airport and professional training facilities. In 1960, Huntington Beach had more than one oil well for every three people. The Red Car took passengers along the coast from Long Beach to Newport Beach. A salt-water pool was the big attraction at the Huntington Beach pier. At Huntington Beach High School, the Oilers were having their best season in many years. They were off to a 5-0 start and would go on to post a 6-2-1 record. In 1989, there still are a few oil wells pumping away in Huntington Beach.

One of the most coveted oceanfront residential parcels in Orange County sold for around $5 million last month--and that's essentially just for the dirt. Although there are several older dwellings on the Laguna Beach property and zoning allows seven estates, sources say the buyer just wanted the land to build his own personal compound. County records list the buyer as a Groves family trust.
