Art and architecture blend seamlessly in this contemporary Laguna Beach home in the private community of Irvine Cove. A heavily detailed three-quarter-inch layer of French limestone encloses the steel-framed structure, creating the illusion that it's one, monolithic column of limestone. On both sides of the main entry, curved glass panels are accented with rivets. A bridge leading from the entrance to the great room crosses over the atrium. Inside the gallery-styled great room, an art wall features a sculptured circular black brick fireplace with stainless steel trim.

The MJ Ranch -- M for Michael Schoff, J for Jeanne Hollingsworth -- sits on 249 bucolic acres in the Santa Ynez Valley community of Los Olivos. Completed two years ago, it has a Mediterranean-style main house, with views of the mountains, valley and 400-year-old oaks; guest quarters; a barn; and a tractor shed with room for six cars. What it doesn't have is noise -- there are no neighbors for miles.

In the L.A. housing market, "gangnam style" appears to lose some of its trend-setting meaning in the translation. Psy, the South Korean musician of "Gangnam Style" video fame, and his wife, Hye-yeon Yoo, have bought a place in a 1989 building in Westwood for $1.249 million. The Blair House condo features city views, high ceilings, a den, a balcony, two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The contemporary complex offers a saltwater swimming pool, a tennis court, a gym, a doorman and concierge services.

Despite the NBA player lockout, new Lakers head coach Mike Brown is busy setting up shop at the office and at home. Brown and his wife, Carolyn, closed a $3-million deal last month for a house in a gated Anaheim Hills community. That will be quite a drive to Staples Center and even a longer one to the Lakers offices and training center in El Segundo. Perhaps Kobe Bryant can swing by to pick him up on his way from Newport Coast. Although Brown declined to comment on the purchase, a Laker spokesman said the coach wanted his children to attend a high school near his new house, so he was willing to make the long commute.

I had my doubts as I turned off the isolated highway onto the sandy open desert. "Drive three miles, then make a left?" I wondered out loud while reading the directions, as my car bounced over mounds of sand, mimicking one of those souped-up cars in a rap video. Something told me my Hyundai compact wasn't built for this. After a 10-minute drive, a telephone pole appeared with a ragged poster attached to it. A hand-drawn arrow pointed me toward a cluster of tiny trailers surrounding a kidney-shaped pool.

Larry Hagman's widow, Maj, has sold their longtime mountaintop home in Ojai for $5 million. The 43-acre spread, befitting "Dallas" oilman J.R. Ewing, had been listed in 2009 at $11 million. The seven-bedroom, 10-bathroom Mediterranean-style estate was designed and built for the couple in 1992. The off-the-grid property has separate solar systems providing energy for the main residence, the well and the caretaker's home, while creating surplus power. When Hagman installed the first system in 2003, his annual electric bill went from $37,000 to $13. Sitting behind iron gates, the 18,000-square-foot main house has an open floor plan with walls of sliding glass doors, painted murals, an indoor grotto-style spa and a retractable roof over a 40-foot saltwater lap pool in the grand room, which has accommodated parties of up to 200 people.
