Always a chubby child, Sharon Russell was put on her first diet at age 5, just about the time she decided to someday be a nurse. But 15 years later, her plans were nearly thwarted when she did battle with the nursing staff at Salve Regina College here. Catherine Graziano, dean of the nursing school at Salve Regina, said that Russell flunked a clinical training class required for graduation and that her weight was "never an issue."

After a two-year command of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, Maj. Gen. Harold Blot turned over the leadership of his 14,000 Marines in a ceremony witnessed by 500 people Friday. Blot gave the command to Maj. Gen. Paul A. Fratarangelo, who comes to El Toro from Camp Pendleton, where he was deputy commanding general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. Blot, 54, praised the 3rd Wing, which includes personnel in Tustin, Camp Pendleton and Yuma, Ariz.

Christmas festivities are a monthlong event in Newport, R.I., highlighted by dinners, home tours, holiday music, teas and children's programs. A four-course Victorian Christmas dinner will be held next Sunday at noon and 7 p.m. at the Astors' Beechwood, 580 Bellevue Ave. The Beechwood Theater Company and madrigal singers from Salve Regina College will entertain. The hosts and cast members will dress as Charles Dickens characters.
