On the phone, history-making NFL figure Carol Channing. You mean you didn't know she was the first Super Bowl halftime star? Before her 1970 appearance, Super Bowls had featured only marching bands. Then Channing came marching in, and the game's halftimes would never be the same. In fact, Super Bowl halftime is now considered the most-watched entertainment event in the world. She turns 93 on Friday and doesn't hear well. Over the phone, my questions about her pioneering performance in New Orleans get bantered back and forth like fumbles on a frosty field, her assistant trying to help, her publicist graciously stepping in, me trying to make sense of it all in my usual ham-handed way. Wish I had a recording.

Despite what you might think, Robin Roberts insists she wasn't happy to see her morning rival Ann Curry ousted from “Today” back in June. In an appearance on “Piers Morgan Tonight” on Thursday night, Roberts and her “Good Morning America” colleagues George Stephanopoulos, Sam Champion, Lara Spencer, and Josh Elliott discussed their recent triumph over NBC's once-invulnerable morning show. “Good Morning America” beat “Today” for the first time in 16 years this April, a position they have regained since the Olympics wrapped up last week.

You don't need to be a weatherman to know why the wind is blowing so hard in the fight between the Weather Channel and satellite broadcaster DirecTV. DirecTV's current deal to carry the Weather Channel is up Monday night, and the two sides are nowhere near a deal. The Weather Channel expects to be dropped, evidenced by its plea on Saturday for DirecTV subscribers to contact lawmakers to complain that they will be robbed of a vital public service channel should the channel go dark.

The Weather Channel is threatening to rain all over DirecTV if it can't come to terms on a new distribution agreement with the satellite broadcaster. The current contract between DirecTV, which has more than 20 million subscribers, and the Weather Channel expired at the end of last year. An extension was agreed upon, but now the Weather Channel is anticipating that DirecTV will drop the service because the two are still at an impasse. The current extension expires Tuesday. "For DirecTV to take us off their lineup would be deeply irresponsible to its customers who not only count on the Weather Channel on a day-to-day basis, but depend on us before, during and after severe weather events," David Kenny, the chief executive of Weather Channel parent Weather Co. said in a statement.
